New Mac, alternative apps and blender question

Hey! So I got myself a new mac mini yesterday and been setting things up. Unfortunately, my adobe CS6 does not work at all with the new version of Mac, and I can't actually buy the programs due to adobe's subscription BS. Thus, I'm looking for other apps and programs that works like Photoshop and illustrator. So far I found a great alternative to Photoshop called Gimp. Took a minute but it surprisingly works very well. Still haven't found anything for illustrator yet. Frustrating as hell but I'm trying.
Now I have downloaded blender since I jave been wanting to work with 3D modeling and such. Just to donk around, I found Spyro dragon models on Model Resource and it works with blender but I'm not sure how to attach the textures onto it. I know I'm very new to blender and will take some time to familiarize with it but anyone know how to put the textures on the Spyro models? Much appreciated if you can.
