Nah. The worst is that the "ough" is pronounced completely different between though, thought, tough, and through.

Likely due to where the original word for "were" originated. English language has a tendency to basterdize a lot of other language when we take words and implement them. That's just my guess, and likely the reason we have so many words that aren't pronounced like one would think. I could be wrong though, I can barely write in proper grammar and it's the only language I know lol

That is the likely cause, yes. When you take a step back and look at it, English is utterly absurd, with countless words that make no sense by breaking the language's own rules, or seemingly not even being grounded by any sort of rules or logic in the first place.
