Seeking help
UPDATE (Oct 31):
We are out of the house as of this weekend, which was mostly taking care of last minute IRL things. I won't be around too much for a while yet. Starting the apartment hunt early, and will be spending some time with family this coming weekend.
I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who's been supporting me through this. Whether its been kind words, art, or financial help, my heart has never been so warm. Especially to those who have helped me in the past too, you really have my back. I'm so grateful to be apart of this community. The help has been more than I could ever imagine. At this stage, I'll be taking the goal down, but will leave donations open 'informally' if you want to shoot anything extra our way. I don't know where life will take us, but I'm hopeful it will be good ♥ Love y'all.

So, our home got condemned.
We are not entirely surprised, but this was the worst case scenario.
We live on the top level, but about two weeks ago, the pipes burst and flooded the entire lower level. Landlord passed away in 2020 and the family that inherited the place doesn't want anything to do with it, nor does insurance.
Thankfully, when our roof collapsed in 2020, the event motivated me to look into our insurance and upgrade it (because I thought we were covered for that, but we weren't! Huh.) And because of that, our insurance is going to be paying for our hotel expenses. So that is a HUGE load off... So thankful I did that. Yeah, our place was a piece of shit, but it was my home, you know?
Still have to figure out how to cover security deposit, food, lost time, temp storage, movers, etc. 2022 has been a monster, IRL hasn't been playing nice. I'm pretty exhausted, so I apologize if I've been a little slower on things for a while. Honestly, late 2020 to now has just been... a really hard period in my life. I know I haven't been at my best for a really long time, but I hope some day I can return to that.
In regards to commission work, it's really important to me that I can deliver these things as promised, so I'll still be prioritizing those deadlines <3
Additional note for patreon rewards (particularly the "packleader" tier) will be posted there later.
We'll be ok, I'm scared and emotionally spent, but we'll be ok. <3
Also uuumm. I have *particular* feelings about landlords. I'm sure we can all agree :P

I don't know the full story, obviously, but that situation sounds very illegal. Like, lawsuit level illegal. I just made a cursory google search, you should definitely check your state's (If you live in the US, I can't remember ^_^; ) landlord-tenant laws and see if the landlord is liable for any of your expenses. (I'm not an expert, but I've heard of stories similar to this)
We are actually canadian, and I'm not so good on the legal side either! To be honest, my mom is stepping in to handle all of the legal stuff, while me & my partner work on the physical aspects. I know we have a caseworker through the government, and she's going to be calling them tomorrow. It was actually the gov that condemned the place to begin with. :o
The thing we are most worried about in the long term is the rent increase - we were paying a very good rate here but just getting by. The rest of the places in our area are at least $400/mo more expensive. But, I'll figure that out when we get there... ^^ Life is a rollercoaster.
Either way, the more info/questions I can pass along to the caseworker, the better. Thank you <3
This could help link you up with an attorney who can represent your case, if indeed it's determined you have one. As for costs, some attorneys work on contingency - they take a cut of the winnings at the end of the lawsuit, as opposed to charging upfront for their services. Ultimately it'll be up to you, your partner and your family to decide if you want to pursue legal action. I hope moving goes well and I wish you the best.
I'll be doing my best!
I dont want to push it on anyone, but it feels sorta.. wrong, to not suggest it, as I feel many are aunaware:
You could maybe look into a local ecovillage or intentional community, for once you have your stuff moved if there's one around you. They can be in places you wouldnt realize- in browstones or houses that from the outside look like any other.
They often charge *far* less then any other option, even charge nothing if you put in enough work to benefit eachother through mutual aid etc.
And depending on area and group, can have other benefits. https://www.ic.org/
I generally dont say anything in these cases, as Im not that great at it, but if I feel I can provide anything I think its better to try < 3
I've certainly considered that option in the past, though ultimately decided it wouldn't be appropriate for us as my partner is disabled (& trans, which is always a consideration for safety).
Regardless, I appreciate you bringing it to my attention, perhaps it would have been right for us if our situation was different. It was only recently I learned that such a thing existed
There are some communities that are inclusive, even more so then the area depending (2 Im considering locally for example have explicit rules and goals to be inclusive and grow as people)
I say as I would be more tentative too if that werent the case
I wish you the best of luck!
Hope everything gets sorted out soon.
Us too - here's hoping it'll be a smooth transition ^^
Next, talk with your insurance agent. Sometimes they are more than willing to assist with something they consider small like a damage deposit to avoid a longer term more expensive hotel while you are relocating. Insurance may also help cover the other temporary expenses of storage and moving.
Someone has already recommended checking local landlord/tenant obligations. Just because the heirs want to "wash their hands" of the property doesn't give them a free pass.
You're correct, it's going to be a mess. Good luck working through it.
For sure. One of my watchers works in canadian insurance, and they gave me plenty of tips and things to inquire about last night. Hopefully after my family works with them today, we'll know a lot more about what to expect.
I appreciate it, and for your kind words as well. <3
I could say a whole novel's worth of things.
It's certainly been a ride... phew. I'm hoping this is the last of life's punches for a while - and that this new start will be a great one. ^^
I would have shared what I know about tenant/landlord rights for you, but looks like everyone else in this thread has beat me to it with great advice. Hope you get all the support you need.
It really depends on the person that is the landlord, truly. Just next to my home we got two: my uncle and an older lady. Can totally say that the lady has been pretty fair and has good relationships with the neighbors that have been passing through... meanwhile my uncle, eh, and quite a revolving roulette of people. Two totally different scenarios right next to each other. Best of luck once more for your future next home... and their landlord!
