You are entirely correct there. It's the animation complainers equivalent of "Woke". Just a catchall term used by random right wingers to say "This hurts my fragile White Supremacist ideals and facts don't matter."

Yeah, I tend to hear a lot of shit about that regarding a couple series my fiancee and I are both fans of: Steven Universe and Star vs. the Forces of Evil. Unfortunately, both series were kinda the victims of production hell due to their respective networks.

IIRC, the CalArts Style is supposed to be a jab at characters having overly-rounded designs. I see where they're coming from (I miss the angular designs of Clone High, Samurai Jack, and more), but it's really not as big of a problem as they make it out to be. They're really just mad that new shows are leaning more liberal and open to new ideas.

Actually it started as John K's way of collectively shitting on shows that really were made by CalArts graduates that were popular in the late 90s and early 2000s like Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack, cause he was salty that his work and stuff aping it was falling out of favour. Now it's just used as an idiotic catch-all term for shows people are tired of seeing that look nothing alike and 9 times out of 10 were made by people who never set foot in CalArts. I've literally seen people call Teen Titans Go and Rick and Morty "CalArts" shows unironically.

I'm sorry?! I just said that I missed the old designs of Samurai Jack (and other Genndy Tartakovsky shows), and you're telling me that the original use of "CalArts Style" was to insult that exact style? Hot damn, that term really does mean nothing.

Its current use is absolutely where it became meaningless--at least when John K coined it, the shows he was lumping together and dumping on were all made by CalArts graduates. It stopped meaning anything when people started using it to describe Steven Universe, a show made by a woman who graduated from an art college in NYC, and compare it to Adventure Time, a show made by an actual CalArts grad. Then it lost even more meaning when applied to Gumball, a show where no two characters outside of Gumball's family share the same animation style, and a show that also wasn't made by anyone who went to CalArts. And then people started applying it to shows that in no way look like those other ones, like goddamn Rick and Morty, another show made by someone who's never been to CalArts and with an artstyle based on a purposely shitty flash animation of Doc Brown and Marty McFly, and retroactively using it to shit on former internet darling Gravity Falls, another show that, you guessed it, was made by a man who never went to CalArts. And finally, it became an outright dead horse when people started using it to describe Turning Red, a movie made by a Canadian woman who went to Sheridan, a Toronto art college that specializes in training people to work for Disney/Pixar, and whose first work for Pixar was storyboards for Inside Out.

Meanwhile, all these same people crying about "beanmouth and noodle arms" turn around and worship old-school anime that did the exact same shit.

These days the 'woke' grift is being used on mecha by people who have never seen Gundam or don't want to acknowledge the space magic that is prevalent in Transformers. And I can't help but sit back and enjoy the show as the "critics" trying to use this tactic for clout get bodied and ratio'd off of twitter.

I'm so glad I don't watch these videos because they're so ever-present. It's always a treat to see good media analysis of well-constructed ideas; and it's always a pain to see someone blowing a non-issue about how a character was written out of proportion.
