I really don't follow Pokemon much anymore

He won the basically first ever planned out tournament by the Alolan folks and received a price though it wasn't like a league in that he'd needed to qualify for.

I found it still weird that the anime writers made this one the world championship tournament with only 8 small regions in the vast workd of Pokémon available so far. On that scope this should only be like one country's worth if anything. ^_^'
Also, Ash got pushed a lot in the tournament. Especially how quickly he went up in the qualification rounds seemed really off to me. It's neat that he does what the player character in Sword & Shield does in beating Leon but at this point is this title really making him a Pokémon Master? I honestly don't know but have zero doubt in that they'll just proceed with the next series like they did in the past. I don't see much of a different take on Pokémon all of the sudden.
