Hm, think it'd work if you uploaded the smaller resolution image first and then updated it with the original one.

Might’ve found a work-around:
• Upload the thing
• Go to the update source file page
• Uncheck the box for “recreate thumbnail from image”
• Re-upload the thing
• Check the box for “recreate thumbnail from image” before finalizing.
• Pizza and profit.


I have yet to establish whether that truly works, but you can experiment for yourself.
