What's with old people and snow?

I noticed that in the past few years, whenever the forecast says we MIGHT get snow, even if it's an inch or two, my stepdad will go to the supermarket to get milk and food as if we're gonna be buried for days. It's not just him either. A bunch of old folks like to stock up on food whenever snow is mentioned. 9 times out of 10, we only get a few inches and never enough to be fully buried. Sometimes we can get like 6 inches or way more if it gets bad, but those are quite rare. There's being prepared and there's being paranoid.

Plus when you get to a certain age, you get continually more fragile as time goes on and a slip on the ice could be the end of it if you're unlucky.
I'd tell him to shut it but I don't want to be fired =3=;
But my guess would be that back in the day it was worse? idk , climate change is a thing so ye
