I like a forums (in general) a lot, and I don't really like Discord, but I do wonder how active ad/or accessible the FA forums were.

I despise this mentality, it feels like half my damn tools and modding documentation has been moved into a discord, and the wiki/forums are left to languish. We are going to regret this whenever discord dies, and years of technical and community documentation fucking evaporates.

we've had chatrooms and forums coexisting for decades at this point, i don't understand why chatrooms are utterly replacing forums they serve entirely different purposes???

It's okay, just move your gallery to twitter :V It sure does get more eyes and notoriety, despite having no proper gallery, hyper limited commenting, a firehose of depression pointed at you constantly, and no fucking actual tags and search for art!

But for some fucking reason so many people chose it, instead of an actual site made for uploading art, or even a fucking booru, I don't even care what one, but fuck it feels like having a purpose focused website is dying, and instead we're just shoving everything into social media platforms, and hoping they survive. While losing considerable functionality, or being at the whim of other louder communities or the platform owners. (aka tumbler nuking nsfw and killing the platform lol.)

What are you talking about? It's a great idea to move all site communication to a platform which constantly encroaches on free users' ability to use it.

Unlike the forum, which is just there and use it, I want something more modern, that takes away origin features to lock it behind an arbitrary subscription paywall. It's how the world works now.

You know they could have both...there's nothing wrong with that. Forums are still nice to have, especially old ones. They are living history and it's just getting canned for something that is even LESS stable and secure, and I actually like Discord, but it's nothing something that's great for archiving old information. Seems like a dumb move overall.

Objectively forums are the far better technology: Lightweight, easy to maintain (considering you're running it all yourself), easy to backup, archive, migrate, search, discoverable via internet search etc. But the clear trend even since the invention of the iPhone is that morons don't want GOOD tech, they want what's fashionable. Somewhere around 2010 tech stopped being a competition for the superior product, and started to be a competition for cultural fashion statement. Thus, everything is social media and Discord now.

I have no love for the admins here, but realistically what choice did they have? Zoomers look at internet forums the way I would look at an Edison Cylinder. If it's not an app on your phone, 80% of the internet refuses to interact with it anymore. Such is the way of things.

Here's hoping they keep it up in read-only as an archive, and/or release a zipped copy to serve the same function. They probably won't though.

I've no desire to sign up for Discord, and certainly not for an inferior and non-public version of a forum.

Also, Discord gets hacked all the time and attracts trolling. Seems to me that they're buying themselves a lot of trouble.

I have used discord briefly. This is NOT a good idea at all.
Ever tried to look back at the help info on discord. It is endless scrolling trying to find what a solution could be.
It really irks me that companies and services want to move tech support to social media, where everything is open and nothing is really searchable without google or some kind of search engine. I want to use your service that I pay for, not have to join social media because you decided to drop phone and forum support. I cant tell you how many services I have tried where their only contact for tech support was face(logeverythingyoudo)book.

Whoever thought Twit was a good art gallery alternative was completely dense. I followed a few artists there in the past, yes, they had a lot of interactivity at first, but their comments sections are just as desolate as they complained here was. At least if I want to interact with an artist here, I can note them and leisurely browse their works. Much nicer than trying to figure out, at a glance, what was their actual submission or a like sub...

I'm gonna be pedantic here and say that technically Discord has some forum and threading functionality. That said, it's a hugely stupid idea to freeze the FA forums and try and move what they were used for to Discord. Having such a thing in a third party's hands is just asking for trouble. Get some Discord admin with a bug up their ass 'bout furries or some asshole prude reporting the FA Discord server or whatever and it'll either get restricted, locked or deleted.

yeah it has fucking, nested chatrooms within chatrooms you have to go to to the chatroom to get to the other chatrooms and they all still function like chatrooms

What an awful idea. Let's take something archived and searchable, that relies on tried and true basic html and requires very little to stay running, and replace it with flavor of the day outside tech that will probably not exist in 10 years. You won't even be able to look back and say "whoops we were wrong" because the conversation is wiped when Discord sells out to Bytedance or whomever. Good luck finding anything. This is like, at my work recently they shredded decades of documents to free up space, after scanning everything digitally. Except the fucking server crashed and the backup failed. Now theres a ton of information lost forever. You know what doesnt need batteries, can't be hacked, never needs a version upgrade and is sill legible 500 years from now? Paper.
