haha holy shit they're closing the forum
naf
and replacing it with a fucking discord chat
imagine that 10 years ago
"we've decided we no longer want a forum, instead we have a skype call. join the skype call thanks"
were threads so bad
was asynchronous conversation, delineated into discrete threads for each topic, really such a terrible thing
god im such a bitchy grandma this isn't what i was EXPECTING to be

FA+

but like oh man i have peeked into the forums now and then
i am not joining more discord servers
to say nothing of, a chat is constantly moving and encourages just prattling
in a forum you at least put some amount of effort at all into posts
we've had chatrooms and forums coexisting for decades at this point, i don't understand why chatrooms are utterly replacing forums they serve entirely different purposes???
i dont' want to be the whiny old lady but oh boy the internet sure is becoming something i dont' recognize, understand, or get
and i don't think i'm WRONG for not liking it, it's strongly corporatized, heavily censored, ridiculously marketed, it's just, this is bad?
But for some fucking reason so many people chose it, instead of an actual site made for uploading art, or even a fucking booru, I don't even care what one, but fuck it feels like having a purpose focused website is dying, and instead we're just shoving everything into social media platforms, and hoping they survive. While losing considerable functionality, or being at the whim of other louder communities or the platform owners. (aka tumbler nuking nsfw and killing the platform lol.)
of all places why move your art THERE
you cannot put any long descriptions, can't put up links without your posts being suppressed, the algorithm ensures that you only ever see anything once, you can't BROWSE anyone's """gallery""" it's like oh i wonder what ellse they've drawn, let me see it in a single uninturrpetd infinite scroll that if i stop in the middle of i have to restart from the very beginning every time
fa had some scandal or another and everyone went "where should we put our furry porn? i know! in the place where world leaders literally threaten ww3 on one another. this is why my furry porn will live."
and now musk has turned twitter into his insane rich boy tumblehouse and oh my god i cannot be more elated the schadenfreude is overwhelming watching that hellsite die and all the artists who moved to it having to find new places to go
Unlike the forum, which is just there and use it, I want something more modern, that takes away origin features to lock it behind an arbitrary subscription paywall. It's how the world works now.
Get with the times!
different user names for different forums for different situations? nah fuck it
you have One Account and this is your Communications Account
internet used to feel like home i dont know what this current version is other than an extension of capitalist corporatism and ihate it hate it hate it
i like discord in the same way i liked skype, or MSNmessenger
it's a good chat program
i have no illusions as to its permanence and the idea that it's anything more than a very fancy irc confuses me
I have no love for the admins here, but realistically what choice did they have? Zoomers look at internet forums the way I would look at an Edison Cylinder. If it's not an app on your phone, 80% of the internet refuses to interact with it anymore. Such is the way of things.
Here's hoping they keep it up in read-only as an archive, and/or release a zipped copy to serve the same function. They probably won't though.
but yeah i guess the modern internet doens't really CARE about having your own space
everything is rented from one of 10 corporations
and it's fine it's safe to trust corporations look at musk buying twitter and changing the rules every 12 hours to fit what his latest mood is, it's totally safe
secretly i'm still on somethingawful since like 20 years ago and it's the one place on the internet that's only really changed for the better
I've no desire to sign up for Discord, and certainly not for an inferior and non-public version of a forum.
Also, Discord gets hacked all the time and attracts trolling. Seems to me that they're buying themselves a lot of trouble.
I hate that new communication forms make travelling through archives that hard. I hate infinite scrolling. What's wrong in having an history!
want to find it in discord?
uh fuck you i guess, try searching for it and finding someone talking about it and then read 6 month old chat history and try to see what they were talking about inter dispersed with several other topics
and no you can't just look at it either, you have to add it to your discord servers, because god knows my discord server list already isn't far too long i need to be in 300 of the things
imagine 10, 15 years ago if some furry artist was like
"oh, if you want to see my art i don't post it to vcl or furaffinity. you have to join my skype call and scroll back to look at it."
I have used discord briefly. This is NOT a good idea at all.
Ever tried to look back at the help info on discord. It is endless scrolling trying to find what a solution could be.
It really irks me that companies and services want to move tech support to social media, where everything is open and nothing is really searchable without google or some kind of search engine. I want to use your service that I pay for, not have to join social media because you decided to drop phone and forum support. I cant tell you how many services I have tried where their only contact for tech support was face(logeverythingyoudo)book.
This is exactly the same thing, and not an improvement at all.
it's even worse than before
"We hope to see you in our new community and look forward to chatting with everyone soon!"
I don't think they do, they disable the comments in every newspost.
This is like, at my work recently they shredded decades of documents to free up space, after scanning everything digitally. Except the fucking server crashed and the backup failed. Now theres a ton of information lost forever. You know what doesnt need batteries, can't be hacked, never needs a version upgrade and is sill legible 500 years from now? Paper. Try reading a thumb drive in 2077. It's like a 7 inch floppy to today's kids.
absolutely make digital backups that's great but digital is like
that's fucking electricity and microswitches stored just-so, it is heinously more fragile than physical media
ngl i'm so fucking pissed we've moved off of cd-roms and i'm terrified we're going to stop using usb drives too like yes getting off floppies were fine they had shit for storage but we're replacing everything with nothing
people don't even own their own music or games anymore they just stream the files remotely and have no control over them. binch i got my music on my HD DRM free and i can copy it as many times as i need to make sure i dont have to buy every song i like all over again every 7 years
and yeah like maybe it's just me being a secret triple-agent from somethingawful for 20 years talking here, but on a forum it's harder to just, say whatever. if you're making a post you at least put a bit of effort into the fucker. on a chatroom who the fuck cares just type like
you can just
type in half sentences
with each message
in fact?
this is normal on discord
which also means conversations tend to be several people talking over one another in bigger servers, OR, a few popular central people dominate all conversations and everyone else are simply observers
ive been in large discords before and they are always only ever a chaotic mess or a handful of regulars and a billion lurkers
