Sadly very true, but in case of federated instances on Mastodon, they are at least not controlled be a batshit insane milionare supporting right wing shits and if you catch one you can always make it known and getting those instances getting kicked out from being in the Fedrated page on Mastodon.

Mastodon is a confederation of servers and centered on freedom of speech, be careful what you go to.
Gab, the far right social network, was a Mastodon server at one point. It has been cut off, but other lesser known server could be part of it, or servers that let anyone speak.

Tl;dr you could have literal nazi from other servers reading and commenting your posts.

Why its a good idea using federated servers, the creator of Mastodon strongly speaks out against racsim and other bullshit of that kind, so those kind of instances will never be federated on the offcial Mastodon page. Also instance owners can and likely will block those kind of instances as well and you as user have plenty of tools todo so as well.
