Game Dev - 7dfps Jam Results
Let’s get started with the result of the 7dfps Jam. I didn’t finish the game after about 4-5 days of work. However, I’ve not posted any pictures of where I am development wise because there’s not much visually, with really only the spinning lights on the APCs which look better in motion. I might make a gif some time.
Overall, I reached about the same point I was at with the previous week long FPS I tried to make. Though I only did about 4 days worth of work on it. That said, the 7dfps deadline was extended to allow for late entries. I’m not going to take advantage of that however since I doubt I could finish it with 3 days more work. I don’t feel bad though, since most of the other one man projects got to a similar state to me for the deadline.
How did the team of pros fare? Not much better. The end result is a wave survival mode that takes place in a rectangle with columns for cover, where you shoot a spider tank and holographic soldiers. There are three things that were not stock. An incomplete spider tank model that is little more than a slow moving turret, the movement which is slippery and feels broken, and the music which is okay.
Here’s what’s baffling to me. You have a six man team of experienced/professional devs, but remove the stock assets and plug ins and what is there? Music, janky movement, and an unfinished 3D spider tank model that is basically a turret. At the current stage of my game I currently have janky movement and an unfinished 3D APC model that is basically a turret.
It’s been a week since the game jams original deadline, and I’m still struggling to wrap my head around it. There are some differences of course. I made some buildings, but those are made with stock textures. I don’t have HP implemented, but I’m confident I could add that in a day or less. It’s just so bizarre to me that idiot me vs six pros and we basically ended up at the same point.
So, what’s next? Two of my projects (Leanna and the small horror FPS) need character models, so that’s next on the todo list. I’ve been really bad at making character models so far, so my plan is to make a basic character model (ie. barely a step above minecraft) and refine them once I have the process down.
