And if it was, that's not a big deal.

Suppress information.
Deny it's happening.
Claim it was for the greater good.
Claim the bad result is a nothingburger.
Deny responsibility.
Deny bad intentions.
And finally go full attack to silence criticism.
This describes so many situations. Describes the typical egotistical discord server owner. Describes daddy government's involvement being revealed in the Twitter Files. It's all narcissists. Narcissists everywhere.
Stay safe out there.

We have to be able to hold people accountable if we're to have a healthy society. And this obsession with keeping things equal (rather than fair), and calm creates the situation that you so aptly put: it empowers and enables the problematic people, and silences the victims of such behavior since they cannot speak up about it.
