it used to be you had to do like "bovine-other" for deer or some shit but they made sure to include the OC races of people who were friends with the admin team

it only took them 20 years to add actual common animals to the dropdown box!

Sometimes I'm reminded that newcomers to FA see the new skin by default and just think that's the site and I shudder. Then again, I guess it does filter those too clueless to go hunting in the settings. I've often fantasized about them shifting all the metadata for images over to a booru-like tag set. Just get a decent set of tags and then freeze it (except for "Artist:") so everyone uses the same keywords and there isn't a bunch of nonsense in there.

The really funny/sad part is that compared to any number of other changes FA needs, adding sane text formatting, automatic upload and recognition of various word file formats etc is trivial. A good programmer could probably knock it out in a couple days, or, given the FA "codebase", maybe a couple weeks. If FimFiction, hell if SOFURRY could figure it out, it can't be that hard. Hey, there's your solution Autumn, just set up a SoFurry account! The only furry site even more mangled than FA. But you CAN format text!

Nah, I could be wrong but I think they quietly deepsixed Zaush a bit after the drama. My favorite programming story on the site is how deleting comments originally didn't actually delete them, it just switched to not showing them. Every comment has something like an index number, on a hyperlink, which can be easily figured out by looking at the code. All you had to do to view "deleted" comments was link directly to them. Probably could have made a browser ext. to do it. They finally patched it, but the fact that it didn't occur to anyone while they were implementing it says a lot.

When I upload stories, I do them in .txt too, but I type them inside of this https://www.sceditor.com/

It allows me to use bbcode and whatnot, and then copy+paste the source into notepad. Only problem is that you can't save or back it up inside the website or the downloaded program. You have to make backups with .txt files and I've sometimes lost stuff by accident because of it. Just be careful if you decide to give it a try!

If you're a contrarian like me you could use https://www.weasyl.com/ they do have a document workflow that allows more options than FA, if you don't care about the google aspect you can even link to a google doc.

They have said that improvements to that are coming fairly soon, so at least there's that. I don't think that they've specified any of them or exactly when, though.

Twitter has become SUCH a dumpster fire.

Having no galleries makes it next to useless as an art site. The only reason I can see for an artist to be on there is additional eyes on their work or to connect with other artists. I really can't understand the folks that have fled here for there.

There's also the little thing about feeding surveillance capitalism, and how they fairly recently made it so that "Adult" art can't be seen unless you're a member, which I will never be, making it even more useless.

I have a LONG list of criticisms of FA, but I also have at least some degree of sympathy as well. For a site running on rickety code and a shoestring budget, at least they're still here. I think that all the kneejerk criticism of them is understandable, but only too easy to make.
