A question for you--bigger comic projects!
Hey all! In my last journal I mentioned opening slots for bigger comic projects, such as 5-page short stories(may also do 10-pagers in the future).
Since these will be bigger/longer term projects with much higher costs, it feels strange to require full upfront payment like I do for my smaller commissions. At $600 per project($120 per page), I don't want to immediately drain you guys of that much money when this project is likely to take more than 1-2 months to finish.
The workflow for this commission type will start by sketching out all 5 pages so that everything flows together, and then working on each page individually for colors and such. Because of this, I've ruled out the option of invoicing $120 per page, since I'm not really working on each page as it's own individual commission.
So far, these are the options I've come up with for payment plans:
-Half payment upfront, and the other half payment after all of the pages have been sketched out and approved
-Three payments of $200, 1st payment upfront, 2nd payment after all of the pages have been sketched and approved, and 3rd payment after flat colors have all been finished
My question to you is, which of these payment plans sound more comfortable/doable to you? Would you rather only have one of these options, or both to choose from? Do you have any other ideas for payment plans?
Thanks for any feedback you have, I'm currently working on a doc with guidelines for this commission and what to have on hand! I'm planning to open a slot for this commission type very soon, so please be on the lookout if you are interested! 0v0

We agree on a price for the "full project". Idk, let's say 700$ for 10 pages.
Then depending on their schedule, we split the price depending on the portions of work required.
So for example on a 10 pages long comic project I could pay them 300$ and get the first 4 pages done, when they are finished, I pay 200$ to get the other 3 done, then when they are finished I pay the last 200$ for the last 3 pages.
This way both sides have a benefit. I as a commissioner don't risk to pay all at once for a long project of which I can't see the end (I had friends that paid upfront full long comics and are stuck with artists that are taking YEARS to even drop sketches, and it's too late for them to ask for a refund), and the artist prevents to drain all their mental energies on a project they know they should finish with a fast pace in order to have time for other commissioners too.
So, these are my 2 cents in the matter ^^
Hope it can be useful for you
I'm definitely looking to split payment into 3 now, since it makes more sense than doing half and half. For sure I'd rather not make someone wait /years/ for 5 pages, and I can't see myself taking that long to finish a project unless it was an ongoing comic series haha~
Instead of $200 for each 3 payments, I might actually do $250 for the first one, since sketching all the pages out would be the most difficult part for me. Then $175 for the last 2 payments, though if people would rather do the $200 for each payment, then I'll stick with that.
Thanks for the input again, it's very much appreciated~
