Turns out I actually like Mastodon š

General
Iāve been really down the last month. I know a lot of babyfurs have run into issues with FA recently. I privateād my Twitter a few months ago because I stopped feeling safe there and wanted to take a break. Iām still on Twitter but it feels quieter and empty. There really doesnāt seem to be a good āhomeā for us right now. š Iām confident the dust will settle eventually but for now I just feel lost.
Iād been resistant to Mastodon for a long time. Itās confusing. I donāt like that federations can block each other. I didnāt like that I had to pick a federation. But I also really, really miss sites like Babyfur.Me and Fluffy Waddles. I thought maybe Mastodon could be similarā¦
So I picked the federation I remembered people mentioning a while back and made an account.

^ Thatās me!!
And heck, I really like it??? š Traffic is still small but this instance feels really cozy. Kepler, the owner, seems very active and committed to building this instance up. Itās old enough that I missed the ānew siteā wave of activity. Hopefully the users there will be active for a while. For the first time in a very long time I feel safe to be 100% myself. I havenāt had that in a long time š„ŗ It may die off at some point but Iām enjoying it for now.
If youāre interested in joining there are two major babyfur instances: cubhub.social and babyfurs.social. You can follow people in other instances so it doesnāt make a huge difference which one you join.
https://Cubhub.social seems to be more art and status updates.
https://Babyfurs.social seems to be more IRL pics.
Thatās just my impression š
As a side note, I know many people are migrating to Cohost. I honestly donāt love it but Iām at least following people on the site. Feel free to follow me there if you want. Iām not post much at the moment though.

FA+

Iām still waiting it out. I know you really like cohost. Ultimately Iāll go where my friends are š„° Iāve watched this community make several platform swaps. Iām sure there will be more of a consensus by the end of the year.
Twitter's convenience made a lot of us (certainly me) kinda lazy in some regards; we just kind of took for granted that that one place was enough, with maybe an off-Twitter presence somewhere (like FA) just for the sake of having a gallery. But now we actually have to be mindful of where and how we interact - there's stuff I'm willing to say on cubhub-social that I wouldn't say on Cohost, and vice versa; there's a lot of overlap, but they're two different communities. But honestly, that feels like a good thing. It's nice to see multiple communities growing in real time in a way that says "okay, we have places to go even if this doesn't work out."
I think in some ways the big numbers on Twitter broke me. I was a big champion of it when people started joining because I loved having a way to follow and interact with other furs that wasnāt in real time. For art, the interactions on FA on have always been more genuine but the little hamster in the back of my brain wants the Twitter numbers go up. š I havenāt taken commissions in two years, my reach doesnāt matter too much, and I *still* think āif I draw it this way I will get more retweetsā.
Maybe having different sites to pick from will be a good thing. Maybe I need to invest in fixing up my own website to be more usable or look into actually using cohost.
Personally, I'm having good luck there, but then I actually kept trying for more than a few days where as others gave up IMMEDIATELY when they saw they didnt gain the traction they're used to. Guess its just personal preference when it comes to speed but as one of the only sites that doesnt give 2 shites about the rules of the Internet anymore, I think I'll stick by it.
I'll give you a follow there! Mine is https://plush.city/@relee
