Back grounds question

So for those of you who like myself have many characters do you keep your in their worlds? Let me explain. Do you only get art of certain characters in certain ways or is everything up for grabs?
I personally have a 1 or 2 characters that can fit into any and all time lines, stories. And backgrounds but I do also have some that have strict backgrounds and stories I do my best not to stray from.
