April 2023 Check-in
~Milachu's Journal~ Heya there~
Just wanna do another lil check-in. More updates on:
- the state of my commission queue & what I plan to work on
- what I’m thinking of working on
- any other updates
- and let any of you all ask open-ended questions you’d like me to answer.
— Commissions & Plans —
I have 4 commissions in the WIP stage right now, and like 6 others I haven't started on yet. I'll get right back to work on those soon, and then open for commissions as normal more than likely (probably in 3-4 weeks from now.
I am also still working on the Glory Hole Stories 3 comic. I haven't made much progress since last journal because I was on break, but I now have 3 of the 18 planned pages colors, and I'm working on page 4.
I'm working with 2 people for 2 different comics right now. One is with StormySparkler and the other is with PathWarden. Both are going to be amazing in the end, and I look forward to them being completed. :3
The comic for Stormy is on a little hiatus at the moment, but we plan to resume work on the comic as soon as we're both ready again.
The comic for Warden is still in the writing phase because I want to make it extra good. I'm being a perfectionist on his comic, and I have so many ideas I want to use when making it.
— Ideas —
I'm thinking about making some animations. Now that I have planned out more than a few comics, and I know the time and effort I need to put into planning them out and then drawing them, I have wondered if animations would be a relatively quicker side thing I can make here and there. I see people like Canary and Whygena make good looking animations, and I think "oh I'd love to do stuff like that too"! The art program I use, Clip Studio Paint, has limited animation usage for the plan I subscribe to, but it's more than I need to make some simple loops. I think animations have the potential to be easier and faster to make than comic pages if I just make single frame-by-frame drawn loops. Making a 5 page comic can take a day of planning, then a couple weeks of work to draw - but I believe a simple animation loop can be made in a day or two and be just as rewarding. I've also had a couple voice actresses hit me up saying they'd do voice work for my art, and that really gave me some confidence, especially to make some animations. I can play those animated loops over and over in a video file, make some slight changes to the frames in alternate loops to add variation, add some sound effects, get some voice acting work, add a cum scene, and the animations can get really beefed up. I'm giving it serious consideration.
— General Updates —
I just got done taking a 2-week break, so I wasn't working on any drawing for a while. However, the work I got done before going on break was great! I'm starting to re-establish a better work flow using coffee and the time tracking app I mentioned before.
While I was on my break, I felt super lazy. I just did a lot of gaming at first, and that was fun, but it didn't feel fulfilling. And I could tell the solution wasn't that I need to do more drawing. I realized I'd let my place get kinda messy the past few months. I wasn't keeping up with it much. So I put on old episodes of a podcast I used to listen to and got to cleaning. Weed also helps with this because I can just zone out while I clean. The result is that I now feel way better about myself at the end of the day.
Very recently I just switched my Patreon from SFW back to NSFW again. Patreon told me in December 2020 that Nintendo sent a DMCA over my account there, so I stopped posting pokemon there and even made an original mouse design for Mila so I could keep drawing her and post her on Patreon. But then in January 2021, Patreon said "actually, while we're here..." and they told me my content looked under-aged and that goes against their community guidelines and I'd have to remove it. Pretty much all of it. They said Buttons looked cub, and also they didn't allow inter-species stuff (like humans and bipedal furries, or bipedal furries and quadrupeds, etc) so stuff with Mila and humans or other anthro characters had to go. I got frustrated and felt super limited by all of this. I considered moving to Subscribestar, switching my Patreon to SFW, or using something like Fanbox. I chose to remain on Patreon as a SFW artist and see how things would be if I just used it as a tipjar, since I couldn't use it to post early access NSFW content.
After doing this for the past 2 years, I have improved my art skills, and also experienced unexpected issues in running a SFW Patreon as an adult artist. I think my anthros like Buttons should be fine by Patreon's standards now. I won't be able to post size-diff content because it may look like "inter-species", but I draw a wider range of stuff now and I don't believe it will be a huge issue. The unexpected issues I ran into were: 1) that the private Patreon discord had to be completely sterile too, so I mainly just used the public NSFW server instead; 2) once my content started to improve, and I had a NSFW piece of art that I could actually post on a NSFW Patreon, I couldn't just post it as early access anymore since I was set to SFW. In order to go from NSFW to SFW, I had to submit a request and have my account reviewed, so it's not a simple matter of flipping a switch on or off. Going from SFW to NSFW though is way different, that one actually is just a switch. But once you flip it on and your account becomes NSFW, you can't unflip it without getting your account reviewed.
Now that my Patreon is NSFW again, I look forward to being able to post some content as early access again and give my subscribers more of a reward for supporting me.
While I was taking these past 2 weeks off, I worked on the SFW Buttons comic "Pushing my Buttons". I came up with several good ideas, and started stitching the story beats together by adding more interesting moments of interaction between characters. So for those of you who have read the 3 pages I made back in 2021 and look forward to more, I hope you're glad to know I'm picking this project back up. :3

FA+

And I can add categories to them as well int he form of tags. So I can tag a commission I'm working on as "commission work", or if I'm doing some writing I can tag it as "creative writing".
It's weird to say that now considering I used to be exclusively pikachu up until 2021. x3
Thank you for sharing as much of your work as you do with freebie followers like me, I always look forward to seeing you publish new things!
