How did you change?
2 years ago
Hi all,
So for the past 15 years, basically half my life, I've been struggling to make choices and commit to them.
I've finished an education after a relatively long time, which definitely affected my self-confidence but even more so in my confidence in making choices. Especially life changing ones.
I'll pick something up occasionally but then have trouble sticking to it to get good at it or learn it proper. I do enjoy the things I pick most of the times but I just can't stick to it.
Some things I even invest a little money in, other things I get gifted and ofcourse obligatory gym membership that I neglect because it's so haaaaaard...
So my question is, people who have been in my situation, where you just can't make choices and/or can't stick to the ones you make. How did you change it? How have you gotten out of that hole that keeps you sliding back in?
TLDR;
People who used to not be able to make choices, how did you change?
It seems only make journals to ask people for help or promote people I like these days.
Feel free to DM me with your reply if that's easier

I think it's safe to say most people pursue stuff they have a level of interest in, there are some hobbies I've always had, but never done anything with, art and music are a good example of that, because although they make me happy otherwise they have never helped me in any practical way, unless you count my happiness as practical..? But.. Yeah there a lot of obstacles that make it hard to stick to something, I haven't had a new hobby for 15 years.. Or at least more accurately.. a hobby that I stuck with.
I think one big obstacle is having less patience.. What do I mean by this? Well.. You see all these hobbies where someone either has an impressive skill level that inspires you or their hobby allows them to create beautiful/useful/cool things and you want to do that! But... As you know it doesn't start like that, sure sometimes you can do something and be a natural or at the very least not completely suck, but.. It's rare for someone to be good right off the bat, plus when there are several people that can do this thing better than you, yeah it can motivate you, but it can easily demotivate you too and I think.. Unless you're prepared to fail, sometimes it's easier just to forget about it.
If I were to offer advice? I suppose.. I would say just stick at it, I know some people might be scared to have wasted time, but you will improve, it may not be as fast as you like, but it will happen, y'know?
My journals are just diaries at this point, but some people journal down their life, so.. Not exactly a bad thing x), I think in America journals are mostly used for taking notes. We did have journals for taking notes, but I think we call them something slightly different, like textbook or something? IDK... Diaries are exclusively for tracking dates and events though, (as far as I'm aware), sorry I'm done now.
I try to follow that advice, but sticking with something is hard when the results are hard to see. It's why sports is so hard, the slow results don't show well till you compare months appart. And wasting time is very much a fear for me. Having done nothing is obviously worse but at least it doesn't feel like a choice as much as making a choice and it being "the wrong choice" as silly as that is.
I've considered journaling and keeping a diary, still might if I can stick to it :P
Definitely and.. Speaking from my own experiences I can only further validate that view, but sadly I do think you need to push/force it a bit, there will come a point where it becomes enjoyable or at the very least you feel capable in said interest, but.. I think unless you're super lucky, you need that persistence sadly.. ;w;
I suppose... If this is about being able to do something you feel passionate about, had you considered.. Volunteer work? I think unlike other hobbies, that's something you can just in straight away and depending where you're volunteering, it could act as a door for more opportunities, I'm not saying for definite, but.. I just wanted to suggest more options, I mean you're a very friendly guy and I'm sure you'd like the chance to do good and maybe meet some people in your local community, so.. If you're up for it, maybe it's a consideration..? Especially since you said you're scared of wasting time, I mean.. How can time be wasted if you're productive with it? Y'know?
I hope that helps, I think hearing it directly from you, it helps me narrow things down, I'm not the best to ask since I have a lot of hobbies, but I can speak from a place of.. relatability? At least when talking about picking up new skills/interests.
I have found journaling fulfilling, especially given the faults of human memory, so I would definitely recommend it, ^^ anyway I hope that helps.
