I'm sure I'm one of many saying the same thing, but it's worth checking out Fediverse options for something more Twitter-like in microblogging. I dun wanna evangelize, since I'm a little biased as the admin of an instance (blimps.xyz) but it's been hopping! And while Threads is talking up future having connectivity to other ActivityPub software, a LOT of independent servers are not going to permit it, primarily because of issues with Facebook/Meta and with the concerns about trying to deal with moderation from a singular service that size.

If you feel up to giving it a shot, check out https://furryfediverse.org/ for a list of furry instances and good apps to use for it. (And while Blimps is listed as 'registration closed' under the 'focused' tab, that status usually just means 'invites work' for most servers!)

Ya, Meta running it is also certainly a negative to me. Elon Musk running twitter is more of a negative but like I at least trust Meta to not burn their apps to the ground (well... ignore Metaverse... Skype... VR...). Ok so like its not ideal either way but with me only having the attention span to focus on like 2 or 3 social media accounts at max reliably. I want to be sure that the ones I do operate one will be around and actually have a nice active userbase. How is the Fediverse? How does it feel? I know Mastodon was something I was curious about but was afraid to dive into (at least before Twitter's slow death)

It's been getting considerably more active than it was after Musk took over and various things he's done, and even that had dramatic growth. My own server is seeing sustained increase in users and interaction with other folks, and others are seeing the same. It feels cozier than Twitter IMO; you don't see anything from folks you don't follow unless you look in the Local timeline (for public posts made on the server you're on) or Federated (public posts your server knows about, regardless of where it's from).

Again I'm pretty biased because I run a server, but I've quit using Twitter since like January (outside of originally, as a reflex, clicking like or RT on posts I was directly linked, have ceased that). And it's been more fun overall ^^

I might have to give it a try then. You are the first person I have talked to who had one. Everything else was just journal posts or hearsay that never really tells the picture well. With all the chaos here and on Twitter lately, not sure what is the next best thing or just a fad everyone thinks is great for the next 5 minutes before putting down like a spoiled kid with too many toys.

Nah, I understand that. I think right now there's more instances spinning up, which is good for distributing users. Each time there's been growth, there's been a little fall-off initially, but it's sustained a considerable usage. This time, with the latest nonsense from Twitter with rate limits, is the biggest round of growth I've seen in a while!

Considering it isn't even allowed in the EU due to privacy violations...
