When was furry a thing
I may be overreacting to this but I couldn't let it go.
Someone posted a link to the cover art of Breed to Come, fiction by Andre Norton, to a Telegram channel where I sort of lurk. People asked "Where is that from" and the answer was that it was from the novel..."Straight up furries before it was a thing".
Before furries were a thing.
Did "furry fandom" begin in 2010? Or even later? Did furry become a thing just in time for people who graduated from high school this year to have a chance to pick a fursona? Did it become a thing when fursuit makers became able to advertise themselves and their services?
Just my personal opinion, but "Fashion is smashin' the true meaning of it".
Do we go all the way back to Narnia by Lewis or The City by Simak in the 1950's?
Do we go all the way back to The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr in 1821?
When did furry become a thing? Ask a writer. We'll know.

Interesting? Erotic? Depends on who you ask.
Depictions of anthropomorphic animals goes back to the Stone Age, and have been a staple of fantasy for millennia. I'm not certain when the term 'furry' arose to describe the fandom, but Wikipedia states that the concept arose in 1980 at a science fiction convention when the publication of a picture by Steve Gallacci prompted a discussion.
That's the tradition I'd like to claim fellowship with. :>
Furry (as you well know) has always been with us. As to the 'new' in thing that people do - I hate to see us politicized into something we are not.
Vix
(And yes, I know it's spelled Petri. Like my first 35mm SLR.)
"Nothing existed before I started paying attention."
I wonder if this is the fall out from common sense being in short supply these days? Those of us brought up learning to use critical thinking...surely they would figure out that "stuff" was around before they themselves where around?

"Well of course they would...and don't call me Shirley"

Many people today seem to live in some kind of La-La Land bordering Twitter and Facebook. Anything outside of that either didn't happen or didn't matter. I've had people tall me with a straight face that the statues of Abraham Lincoln have to come down because he owned slaves. I'm starting to get that feeling like a cow fell on my head.
