these cant be in any order....i tried... id put one over another one day, but then think, "oh fuck that, THIS is the best one" some other day.... its all in how im feeling. :D
i mean, if you ask me right now, id go with Rear Window since someone told me he saw it over the weekend. :D buuuuuuuuuuuut...anyway.......read dis:
i start with Rope.... two college kids kill a friend BECAUSE THEY CAN.... then try not to get caught, all the while daring anyone to figure out what they did. a lot of people put "Rope" down but i love this movie really because it has only three or four cuts in the whole film......its done entirely as it happens, time passes the same way..........its definitely one to watch as a study of how to make ongoing sequences work smoothly. the acting isnt so hot but its more that i include this one for its art form.
another top ten is Notorious, espionage picture about American spies infiltrating a ring of Nazi sympathizers in post-war South America. its as awesome as it sounds! (in fact a lotta people say this is the best Alfred ever did)
Vertigo is awesome too. in much the same way as Alfred uses suspense, its the camera effects that make this a classic. A detective afraid of heights gets hooked up with a stunning blonde obsessed with death. Visibly creepy.
Psycho because DUH..... not too many films can capture a serial killer from inside the mind and give you some of the most chilling scares ever. the shower scene is still considered by many as the height of cinematography. :D
The Birds.... a disaster film as only how Alfie can do it... Birds take over a small town in Southern California in Bodega Bay and start killing people. it doesnt seem like much and the "birb effects" are a little lacking.... but for the time, this is a mind-scrambler. theres a scene in a small cafe where you have actors playing off each other....and its such an awesome scene where you are put right there into the scene with them. Also ............. that playground sequence. Jesus CHRIST.... got chills now just thinking about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shadow of a Doubt..... this is one of the few gems out there that doesnt get enough love, about a young woman awaiting a visit from her dear uncle - who may or may not be a cold blooded serial killer. it is epic.... and Hume Cronyn as a "murder- obsessed" neighbor is hilarious! :D
Strangers on a Train...bone-jarringly suspenseful from start to finish............ two men meet on a train and plan a murder of someone they wish they could kill.... one takes it all in good fun..............................
the other is SERIOUS....
The Lady Vanishes... a classic, about a young woman on a train trying to figure out what happened to a much older woman who has......well...vanished. no one knows who she was and its a wild, crazy ride to the end as more and more clues come to light.
The 39 Steps - vintage classic Hitch. about an every day ordinary man caught up unwillingly in espionage and international intrigue.... its KINDA North by NorthWest but done earlier and with amazing sequences. Oh, and speaking of N by NW...
North by Northwest - this is the ultimate "wrong man" movie. a smooth talking ad executive gets caught up in international spy rings while running from the law. This is a chase film unlike much others. :D i think it lost a little gas towards the end but...i love the movie a lot.
Rear Window - i cant say enough about Rear Window...like i said in some ways its his best to me. a paralyzed man recuperating from an accident witnesses a murder across from his apartment - or did he? there is too much to love about Rear Window to list here....just SEE IT. this is one of those bucket movies. :D Only see it about FIFTY times like i have. (im not kidding, ive probably seen it 50 times)

FA+

Can't agree enough on Rope. A true piece of art, and an impressive technical feat. Three cuts, IIRC, and masterfully diguised. They're really fun to try and spot while watching, and only because they had to load new reels of film. If it were today, you could film it straight through on digital, but digital doesn't capture light in the same way, so it would not have been nearly as impressive of a project, and wouldn't have looked the same.
I still think you should feature this on one of your movie nights. I've seen it a couple of times, but not in years, and I wouldn't mind seeing it again.
Totally...if i had the time and funds... id remake it and make it a smash hit in this day and age.
everyone yelled at the remake of Psycho and i was always thinking, if youre gonna remake something... WTF, remake Rope.
we could see that Wednesday
If you show it on Wed., please make it open. I HATE signing up for shit.
BTW, I saw the of Peewee related showings, save the last chunk of PBA, because I had to go do something, and I have some criticisms, but I may or may not get to those.
Mostly that PBA reminded me how much I hate almost everything Danny Elfman has done since the days of The Mystic Knights Of Oingo Boingo, (Pre Oingo Boingo), and whatever that other movie was was definitely one of the movies I've ever seen. Such a misfire.
I've always lurked for your showings for the reason stated above. If it's an open showing, you may have viewers you're not even aware of.
BTW, what was the troll problem? What were they doing? Couldn't you just kick them out?
he says, knowing full well you had to sign of for FA, didnt ya? =P
I like to keep these things to an absolute minimum. There are things I'd NEVER sign up for. Like, say, Amazon or Twatter.
thats why i keep guests out now. for protection.
Can't you just kick trolls out? I personally haven't noticed any at your showings.
12. :D
