August Q&A/TMI/AMA thing!
Almost forgot it but it's august again and we've had this tradition forever by now. So hey, it's warm here, i'm melting, and a bit bored ngl. So if you ever had some burning questions then now is your chance. Of course doesn't have to be art related and can be pretty much anything! That's the fun of it after all!

But yes, that's one question that gets asked pretty much every year and every year it's a different answer lmao.
If you want to get fancy it's probably a good idea to actually be active, talk to people, maybe post some fanart or memes or what have you to engage more. But i'm just really bad at all of that and barely ever manage to do it.
If I can squeeze in one more question, about your creative process, (and I'm sorry if this was asked before) how long does each of your pieces take from start to finish, on average? And do you even do line art, or do you just paint right on top of your sketch?
Hard to give hour accounts just because of how weirdly split up my work tends to be. But usually I end up with about 2-4 paintings a month. Soooo, can roughly estimate as with art being my full-time job. They do vary a lot though, just depending on how smoothly a painting goes. Some are done within a day or two, and other just draaaaaag on.
I haven't done lineart in years, no. It's either on top of a sketch, or some shapes or whatever i feel like at the time pretty much. Just a case of going with whatever feels right for a certain painting.
I certainly did work with more obvious lineart when I first started out, and it was all more anime-oriented, but yeah, I just switched to what was required when I made the change to wanting to draw more realistic art.
I really like the themes with the sea! Looks so melancholy and wonderful😌
Also I just want to say that you are an incredible artist!
It's getting to be that season, soon.
He might try if offered, but wouldn't go for it on his own.
It's fun in general to have folks try new flavors for the first time.
If they're all little balls all the time it would make it very easy to draw.
Aaaaaand...I can use the word rolly-polly liberally in it!

What is your favorite color?
What is the average air speed velocity of an unlaidened swallow?
Quite like Maroon! Not a too strong one, but somewhat desaturated and dark. Quite nice. Or a british racing green. Both very good.
The african or european kind?
What sort of practice/study do you do? What kind of steps and stages do you go through to arrive at a finished piece?
And my painting process can vary quite a bit, but usually i just try to work out a sketch at the beginning with colours and just getting everything more or less into place. And from there go on and refine said sketch step by step. So maybe working a little bit on a particular piece of clothing, then maybe on the head, after that i feel like maybe the background needs some work.
Just skipping back and forth constantly until I arrive at a point where I'm happy with it.
With commissions there kind of is an extra step with a detailed sketch in the middle to double check with them, but that one may or may not be present in my own private work, depending on how confident i feel with a painting. But yeah, it's basically just a somewhat more refined sketch with the purpose of being readable by other people.
collections[dot]royalarmouries[dot]org/#/objects is great for historical armour and weapon references
When you get on to a individual item you can;t right click on a page to save image, not anywhere to open inspect element
But if you use ctrl shift I it opens a pop up that lets you download as long as you agree to use it non commercially, I think using something as visual reference for inspiration easily falls into fair use ad they have some great high res images from many angles of armour both more basic and the armour of kings
Just been sharing the info with the historical liking artists I know of XD

Are you concerned about AI at all and if it were ethically trained would you use it for anything?
And no, it's not a stepping stone for something bigger, if anything it's probably the other way around, where down the line once it's done it has opened up the opportunity for some smaller things. Maybe some short and sweet VNs about specific moments in a particular character's life or something like that. But that is very much future talk. For now (and hopefully for a long while longer) this one is the priority.
As for concern for AI, yes and no. Conway actually was in part because of AI, and the felt need to do something more than just art. I mean not to say that AI couldn't theoretically do a VN if you glue the parts together. But it just was a moment of that question of what my art is really worth if machines can spit out millions of images each day? Images that perhaps aren't perfect currently, but even after a few years of development are pretty close to being indistinguishable from human-made artwork. And yes naturally there is more nuance to what AI can and can't achieve and what the involvement of a living being in the process of it means etc.
But on a very basic level they are similar, and so I wanted to try to expand my side of the equation in a way that people hopefully will enjoy enough to support.
And the no side of it is that on some level i can't care enough about it. Whatever happens happens.
As for using AI. I've experimented with it here and there in the past, but as mentioned above, for as impressive as it is, it also is equally restrictive. I mean just look at any AI site that has a showroom. 90% of the images are pretty much identical, usually a solo character, the lighting just feels very "AI". Just... idk, There is something to them that makes them appear very samey and stale. So in those experiments it often time was more frustrating than helpful.
That's very informative take on AI. I just worry how much artists can adapt with how fast AI is developing I wonder where it'd be in a decade. Sounds like your taking the storytelling route to adapting. Hopefully AI cant do storytelling anytime soon... not like they have human experiences to draw off of to make compelling stories.
Oh using AI is restrictive? Hmm I took a look at e6ai to see what you mean and yeah I can see it. Seems like mostly solo pinups, I thought it was just people's taste, but kind of good to know its actually restrictive. I do remember seeing some beautiful landscapes on Instagram made with AI... seems pretty nice to generate references if its pretty restrictive with characters.
