Ssssssnaketember has arrived

I sing to thee oh heavens of the wronged serpents.
Low must they crawl upon their bellies and nip at the frightened heels of sinful sapiens.
Songs are sung of their great deeds, and clever adventures.
Songs are sung, and sorrows as they fall to deaf ears who dare not, or care not to listen.
But this month we open our ears and shed our fears.
In new skins we watch the rainbow of scales slide forth,
We give the serpentine terrors their rightful place of honor.
This small slither of snakes sway into our imaginations and inspirations.
Let us see what can be seen in the proverbial nest of vipers in this ball of 10 fandom favs.
-Sir Hiss (Robin Hood)- Xerox Kaa is a interesting character. It is thanks to him and his skills with hypnosis that Prince John is even in the throne to begin with. If he was evil enough, he could have played both brothers and taken over. Instead, he spends the movie being the nanny/yes man to the man child king. Seeing their interactions, you know he spends the bulk of the film thinking “Damn, I backed the wrong one.”
-Asmodeus Poisontooth (Redwall)- The first serpent of the series, and he set the bar for terror that woodlanders feel when they even mention the word “snake.” The cartoon series gave him a perpetually soothing voice. I can see that as a way of lulling his victims, and still keep that lingering creepiness factor. If I have any complaint, he died too quickly. The fight scene could have lasted a little longer, but it was Brian Jaques first run in the series so a quick sword strike may have just seemed better at the time.
- Piloff (Bartok the Magnificent)- A snake-like shape shifter that is more ditzy than a gaggle of 80s cheerleaders. She is part of Bartok’s fetch quest, and absolutely adorable. Baba Yaga uses her juices in her potions, and if there are no questionable art/stories taking advantage of this fact, then I am ashamed of my furry community.
- Rattlesnake Jake (Rango)- Absolutely love a villain with a code of ethics. They are scum, they know it, and they respect those that respect them. This is Jake to the machine gun core. He will kill you as part of the job, but he will tip his hat and pour a drink to your memory if you fought back and stood your ground. With a gravelly voice that could melt butter.
- Rokume (Beastars)- The only security guard in that danger prone highschool. Anne Yatco has such a sultry voice, and this character has such an odd quirk of body dysphoria. Its the whole reason why she hides in the vents and is so sneaky to the point that students think she is a ghost. But its thanks to her encouragement, and practically groping Legoshi that she inspires him to continue to try and solve the murder case.
- Blanca/Bai Suzhen (White Snake)- Oh my goddess, watch this movie! The animation is beautiful, the characters are compelling, the titular White Snake is both hero and lesser villain. She wants to help her people, but also wants revenge on her lover's people. And that is not the most fucked up part of the film. It is considered an adult Frozen clone, but Frozen wished it was this good.
-Heka (Mummies Alive)- Fun facts: Heka is the name of the literal egyptian god of magic. It is also the title of Isis as the "Lady of Magic." So when Scarab creates/summons his sassy staff wife, I can see why he appears so feeble. He probably put a ton of his Magic into her just to have company while imprisoned in his dark tomb. Heka gets more love because she acts as Scarab's sanity and voice of reason. She actually enjoys the modern era, and being a scholar.
- Nag/Nagaina (Riki Tiki Tavi)- Not really much to say. They are a pair of evil snakes and plot to kill the family of the home they are living in. Why so prominent? Because little kid me read the story after seeing the cool cartoon, and was so terrified by their description that I swore cobras were a thing in the Bronx and were hiding near the bath tub. Only positive, they loved each other and their brood.
- Master Viper (Kung Fu Panda)- Soft, gentle, and could absolutely kick your ass. What's not to love? Viper was considered the weak runt of her family according to her lore. But through determination and natural skills, she earns her place as a member of the Five. I also love her "not so subtle " crush on Po. Go get your fuzzy pillow you jade goddess of flexibility.
- Medusa (Greek myth)- You can't have a list of serpents without the gorgon front-woman of the species. Before the hissing hair, she was a beautiful woman who had the serial rapist, Poseidon's, attention. On the one hand, you can say she was a rape victim who was shamed by Athena and turned into a monster. On the other hand, you can say Athena saw her as a victim and gave her the power to fight back. Either way I can understand why authors tend to put her and Athena at odds in stories. Hades' teeth, Athena probably helped Perseus because she thought Medusa suffered enough. Who knows how many years she was cursed before that dork came along.
Heed well these tales o' muses.
For many have trailed, and left forgotten.
Still out there in the swaying grass;
and far reaching limbs of time's arboreal embrace,
I know I should shunt a few.
Be they of valor or vermin, I will ask that of you.
Can you recall tales of ophidian tails still left to slither in shadows?
Speak below and let us all remember.
Yup I still have commissions open. Feel free to toss me a line in the DMs.
