so yeah saw Barbie last night without
lei-lani because i wanted she should see it on a TV and not a computer screen =P i grew up in the 1970s so i was aware of the Barbie doll and what she meant to the world. buuuuuut....... i didnt stop to consider how the girls of today would perceive Barbie dolls and thank god this movie makes the message way clear. See, Barbie dolls changed the world, to me..... for the first time, here was a doll that showed little girls that they could grow up to be anyone they wanted to be.....................................
and thats the failing aspect of Barbie dolls for the little girls of the day.
bottom line? YOU CANT. what Barbie dolls are in this day and age are fascist bull-shitters trying to con you into becoming someone you never really wanted to be and ruin your life. And this is what Barbie (great job by Margot Robbie) is just now finding out when she goes off on an adventure from BarbieWorld to the real world to locate a sad little girl. Not to be left behind is Ken.... who wants to see the real world for himself too......(also Ryan Gosling NAILED it)
so...short story because i dont want to give it all away, Barbie visits Mattel and we meet the CEO and execs (CEO is Will Farrell, as hilarious as ever) and we learn that Mattel people act a lot like toys...because all they do is make toys. :D Which is really hilarious in parts too. Meantime Ken is broadening his horizons and trying to become more of a man.................
WITH DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES. :D
so heres what "Barbie" manages to do for us.... explains how women got to the position they are in now, still subservient and limited in potential...explains how men got to the position of dominance and have never...and sadly. are never gonna relinquish it.......... explains how women can get BACK at men and level the playing field................ and still manages to re-visit the golden years for girls in the 1960s and 70s, when Womens Lib was alive and well and every girl truly had inspiration to do what they dreamed........
and THATS what Barbie the movie was all about... theres a magical BarbieWorld where every girl is named Barbie, every boy is named Ken (except for Alan (Micheal Cera, who is hilarious) who is wandering into that "binary" field)) and everything is perfect all the time....
and we know life's not perfect.... we'd kill ourselves if it was. What Barbie manages to also do is remind us that life is gonna throw us a lotta shit sometimes.............. and we just gotta rise up above it.
Barbie is emotional, powerful, very well done, a testament to women empowerment, even some men empowerment, childhood dreams and nightmares, and a frank, stark look at the lives we all share. β₯β₯β₯
i fucking LOVED it.

similar messages too, in a way....that anyone can be the most important special person in the whole world. :D
Also worth mentioning is how damn funny it was. It really skewered our culture over decades. The sets and the detailed references to Barbie history alone made it a fun watch. It was rather amazing that they had such free rein to make fun of Mattel, too.
All of those famous right wing whiners with the ridiculously predictable "Opinions" on it either didn't really watch it, weren't paying attention, or just have no sense of humor or perspective, which would be my real guess. Boo-fucking-hoo.
I was ultimately amused how whether in Barbieland or the "Real world", everything was fantastic/made of plastic.
Guess we're living in Barbie's world, after all.
you mean the "new" Ken, right?
It also occurred to me that Barbie and I are the same age. I may have a few months on her.
Photos or it didn't happen.
Reminds me of a time at Burning man in, '07, when there was a camp that had a display of maybe a hundred Barbies, etc. of "Barbie Death Camp", which was pretty much what you might imagine.
I found it darkly humorous, and in the general spirit of kids defacing Barbies, but it actually ended up being a controversy. You can look it up.
Sounds like its a blast that needs to be watched sooner or later!
i was worried too, but then i read how this film made over a billion dollars and im thinking...huh okay, maybe i should see it and see what the fuss is about.
Discovered the fuss.
Loved the fuss. :D
IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
