Two Stories

Two stories with interesting connections:
The first story is about how Amanda Moore spent about a year undercover in far right groups who are trying to gain acceptance by the Republicans, push them farther to the right, and recruit to their groups, sometimes with the assistance of Republican legislators and other Reps in office.
This is her story in The Nation, "Undercover With The New Alt Right":

Here is an interview with her about this on the It's Going Down radio show/podcast:
https://itsgoingdown.org/inside-the.....r-within-maga/
In the second story, author Naomi Klein, famous for her book The Shock Doctrine and coining of the term "Disaster Capitalism", among other things, is interviewed about her new book "Doppelganger: A Trip Into The Mirror World", where she explores the Bizarro World alternate realities created by conspiracy theorists and the far right. We all know them, people like RFK JR., Steve Bannon, and any number of folks on this site who are antivaxxers, covid or climate crisis deniers, election deniers, Spreaders of anti-trans and drag queen "Groomer" crap, Qanon nutjobs, Trumpists, far righters, etc.:

Probably an even better interview with her about this: https://www.kqed.org/forum/20101018.....-its-a-problem
A more expressly political and anticapitalist analysis of the subject as presented by Naomi at the Socialist Conference in Chicago on 9/3/23: https://player.fm/series/kpfa-upfro.....tember-22-2023
Don't mind the donation pitching from KPFA. Or do. They're one of the best media sources here, and the first listener sponsored radio station, having started in 1949. Truly unbought and unbossed by the government or corporations, as opposed to corporate media, or even NPR/PBS.
-This is a REALLY interesting and important take on the subject, disorienting in the best possible way.

Also, dying animals aren't dangerous if you take the right precautions. "A Reich That Will Last A Thousand Years" ran out of gas after a decade and change, when Hitler decided to start a land-war in Asia he couldn't win and then said "Better To Die Than Be Killed" after hearing about Mussolini's sticky end at the business-end of a Partisan firing-squad.
In fact, the best illustration of this (aside from "The Producers" and "Jojo Rabbit") is a 1972 alt-historical novel called "The Iron Dream," a "Book Within A Book" literary art-piece that imagines a world where Hitler became a crappy sci-fi author instead of a dictator and treats us to his magnum opus "Lord Of The Swastika..." a "Noble Hero Of The Savage Future" tale indistinguishable from any of a number of sci-fi/fantasy potboilers where the good guys are pure and beautiful and the bad guys are subhuman creeps clogging the bookstore-shelves at any given moment.
Now, I know what you're thinking... "If Hitler Wrote A Dumb Sci-Fi Novel About Winning A Racial-Purity Future War Instead Of Starting A Real One, The Book Would Be Laughably Bad Because Hitler Was A Madman With Shitty, Juvenile Taste In Literature" seems like a minor punchline to write a whole "Stylistic Suck" bad novel around and then give away said gag at the foreward... but Mr. Spinrad's REAL stinger turns out to be the ending coda, where an imaginary literary-critic pens an essay about the resurgent popularity of "Lord Of The Swastika" (for context, the book was "written" in this alt-history's 1954) with then-present-day genre-afficcionados... who can often be seen at sci-fi conventions in sharp black uniforms reminiscent of the book's hero, Feric Jagger, and his Knights Of The Swastika. Holding late-night bonfire-rallies and preaching the fascist philosophy that never took root in the 1930's like it did in OUR reality, but sounds awfully familiar to the reader... who should be all too familiar with the evils of Nazism.
Steven Spielberg once said of the Nazis, especially in their use as stock-heavies in pulp-adventure stories: "If they had never existed, someone would have had to make them up." And nowhere is that more evident than in the pages of "The Iron Dream."
Luckily for the rest of us, all of these people get along like cats in a sinking sack. Every day is The Night Of The Long Knives, and I for one have no interest in yanking THAT Orobouros out of his own mouth.
Letting Fashy dipshits swallow each other is yet ANOTHER reason "A Reich That Will Last A Thousand Years" ran out of gas after a decade and change... even Norman Spinrad knew that, since the "Lord Of The Swastika" portion of "The Iron Dream" has an ending that would horrify the average reader.
I've been saying for years that they're a dying dinosaur, but a dying animal is dangerous because they can lash out desperately.
It's like if a copy of "Might Is Right" by Ragnar Redbeard knocked up a copy of "Ride The Tiger" by Julius Evola, and then whatever they gave birth to knocked up the movie "300." This thing is floor-to-ceiling racism, misogyny, antisemitism and pseudo-historical NONSENSE, all selling the idea that "True Masculinity" involves limiting all extrovert engagement to the preparation of warfighting and being worshipped as a god... all while railing against modernity and anyone who doesn't look like Gerard Butler in Leather Battle Panties, calling the bulk of humanity "Bugmen..." the implication, of course, that anyone not working out, tanning their balls and gleefully murdering their "lessers" is little more than a cockroach stumbling around in ill-fitting human skin. "Civilization," according to this idiot, is an unevolved and barely-conscious pond-scum that worships at the altar of weakness, ugliness and mediocrity... all for the benefit of "merchants, nerds and bean-counters" ruling the worthless rabble from the shadows.
Oh my GOD, is there not a one of these morons who isn't hopped up on some comic-book vision of "The Glorious Past" that never really existed? This guy thinks literature peaked with "The Iliad," and that all Asia ever wrote were accounting-ledgers. HE CLAIMS THAT MEXICAN MOLES AND THAI CURRIES ARE BASICALLY THE SAME, AND THAT CORTES WAS WELL WITHIN HIS RIGHTS TO DESTROY AZTEC SOCIETY AS HEIR TO THE LIKES OF PERIANDER OF CORINTH AND LYSANDER OF SPARTA. Oh, and that the Periander who built a mass-transit system for ships trading in the Corinthian port/is regarded as one of the "Seven Sages Of Greek Antiquity" and the Periander who banged his own mom and pushed his pregnant wife down the stairs (according to Herodotus, who was known to embellish his historical accounts) were the same guy.
On the surface, the "Bronze Age Mindset" this book is pushing is the worldview of a madman... a psychotic brute who slaughters all he considers beneath him, yet women and like-minded warriors will flock to his banner as if by magic. But it's really just like every OTHER empty screed of every OTHER insecure nebbish who thinks "Real Men" take what they want and never apologize for destroying that which benefits the many, it's all easily-refuted bullshit from a guy with no background in history, anthropology, biology or even politics- the dude apparently has a PhD from Harvard in political-science, but one can see that it's money not well spent.
Costin Alamariu is a 43-year-old dumbass who thinks eating soybeans shattered forever the house of Atreus and the legendary lines of the Spartan generals... when in reality Human Biochemistry Doesn't Work That Way, And Sparta Was The North Korea Of Hellenic Greece, Not A Polis Of Superhuman Badasses.
Pretty much sounds like your typical Randian libertarian though, if even a little more around the bend than most of those.
There are people living in such truth-free realities these days that it's stunning. A person here recently recommended a video by Steven Crowder to me as an argument against the history of slave patrols as a basis for the original militias when we were arguing about the history of slavery here. Crowder's video was actually arguing that they weren't a basis for policing, which is also wrong. I responded that there were a large number of actual scholars who would disagree with the esteemed historian Steven Crowder.
Of course that person blocked me.
But yeah, Bronze Age Pervert is getting REALLY popular with the right-wing nutjobs... hell, in 2021 a man in Denver, CO shot and killed five people, and guess what he posted a photo of in his Twitter-feed? That's right... his personal copy of "Bronze Age Mindset," the way the shooter in Gilroy, CA cited "Might Is Right" by Ragnar Redbeard as a reading recommendation.
Yeah, "Civilization sucks, whatever happened to the days when men drank from the skulls of their enemies?" tracts are nothing new... "Might Is Right" was published in 1896, and there's some dispute as to who was behind the pseudonym "Ragnar Redbeard." I personally subscribe to the hypothesis that it was Jack London firing it off as a goof... mainly because I didn't make it thirty pages into that book before I had to put it down because of how ANGRY it was making me. And yet, "Might Is Right" is where the father of modern Satanism, Anton LaVey, cribbed his famous line about "taking a broad-ax and splitting [God's] worm-eaten skull."
Luckily, we know who wrote "Bronze Age Mindset," and his writing-style... good lord, he writes in this "You No Take Candle" style of prose that sounds like if you put a 4chan shitposter's brain in the body of a cartoon caveman and gave him a Slavic accent so thick, you could cut it with a knife. Which makes sense... Costin Alamariu was born in Romania in 1980, and moved with the fam to Newton, MA when he was ten. His pop worked as an engineer for MIT, which is where he got his bachelor's degree... in maths. He then got a graduate's degree in philosophy from Columbia, and then his political-science PhD from Yale... sorry, YALE, not Harvard. My whoops.
Still, my point stands... the book is complete nonsense from start-to-finish, written by someone without the slightest bit of understanding of what the hell he's talking about, under the delusion that he's this misunderstood genius blessed by the kiss of the Muses. It's also peppered with the kind of praise for Nietzsche commonly associated with angry 14-year-old boys (which makes sense- he wrote his Yale dissertation under the title "The Problem of Tyranny and Philosophy in the Political Thought of Friedrich Nietzsche") and the kind of racism and misogyny one would think was dredged up from the bottom of a sewage-treatment plant... he refers to all non-white, non-Western nations as "Turd World" and thinks women are stupid animals fit only for making more Bronze Age Heroes and not much else... "feminism," in his atrophied mind, benefits only (((The Secret Masters And Bean-Counter Nerds Who Benefit From The World Being Populated By Insects In Human Flesh.)))
Yeah... dude is a RAGING anti-Semite, despite coming from a Jewish family. And BEING the very "nerd" he rails against in his book. I've seen the pictures... he looks less like Leonidas Of Sparta as imagined by Frank Miller, and more like a Mirror Universe "Long Live The Empire" version of Screech Powers from "Saved By The Bell."
And yeah I looked up the Wiki on Alamariu. He's a ball of contradictions and cliched right wing garbage. Along with the Randian strains of his rhetoric, Nietsche was an obvious influence, and of course that was there in abundance. His whole obsession with idealized male bodies, even imagining himself an example of that, smacks of homoeroticism, yet he hates gays... Talk about sublimation and self hate...
There's also the double-edged sword of so many people taking him seriously to give his crap the oxygen of reviews and critique, yet on the other hand, of course people like this are ignored at our peril as well. He's basically a juvenile troll, but he's clearly influencing people. This is the insanity of our age, and exactly what Naomi Klein is talking about.
But then again, he also thinks that a Thai curry and a Mexican mole are basically the same dish, so I'm pretty sure that all his "Adventures In The Dark Underbelly" stories are pure bullshit and he's hardly ever left his adopted hometown of Newton, MA... despite insisting that an ideal future-world involves what's basically The Acropolis in Haiti, but with a Death Star Superlaser.
MEANWHILE, IN BRONZE-AGE GREECE... beautiful young men, unmoored from petty concerns like "morals" and "ethics" that would keep them caged like tigers in a zoo, created beautiful works and cleansed the earth of cockroaches with their beautiful warfighting! These were not simpering lap-dogs beholden to the weak and stupid feminine, oh no... these were PIRATES! Warrior-explorers driven to breath free and crush the unworthy beneath sandal'd feet!
Ya ever hear that phrase "Strong men create good times, good times create weak men, weak men create hard times, hard times create strong men?" Yeah, that was coined by a man who was a fantasy-author, not a historian or an anthropologist. And yet angry little boys still believe that only "The Proud Warrior Race" knows what's best in life. Especially Alamariu, who believes that modern feminism- a movement naturally co-opted by "The Leviathan"/"The Secret Masters"/"The Lords Of Lies"- only came about because women are simple, irrational creatures that want a warrior-hero's boot on their throat, not to be subjugated by bean-counters and pencil-pushers who couldn't LIFT a sword, let alone WIELD one.
Honestly, I think that few people end up really reading or listening to the things I ref in my posts.
