Bluesky got started as a side project by Twitter engineers to create an alternative architecture for Twitter relying less on centralized and thus vulnerable structures. Eventually the research project got spun off into a standalone social media network which is currently in semi-closed (*) beta testing.

It's rapidly gaining in popularity particularly due to various changes at Twitter ever since the Elongated Muskrat took over.

*: Currently signups require an invite code. Invites codes are accrued over time by active members, so if you're there then over time you'll be able to bring in all your friends. And since they will also start getting codes, growth is exponential.
