I would have been 6. I have some memory of seeing this in theaters. I remember loving this movie, but recently, I went to watch it again and it seemed flat. But that may have just been the stress of recent years.

That's not a surprising reaction. Remember that one of the things that happens over time is that your standards tend to creep up. One side effect of this is that when you go back to something you watched/read years ago it will seem to have gotten worse when what's really happened is that the 8/10 from back then is your 5/10 now.

It's sometimes referred to as the "suck fairy", as in "I loved this book as a kid but the suck fairy got at it and now it's unreadable." Related are things like the "sexism fairy" or "racism fairy" where you didn't notice the problems back then but you do now.

(This is also why you will sometimes hear that the golden age of SciFi is 12: You're old enough to get it but not old enough to tell just how bad a lot of it is.)

Interesting, but also yes and no. I started disliking sci-fi at an early age since what I did read focused more on the technology and less on the characters. And it is the characters that really draw me into the story. If I do not care what happens to someone in the story, why should I read it? I still enjoy Star Wars, though not as much as when I was 10 and saw it the week it came out which was also my birthday week. Schindler's List and Driving Miss Daisy are more interesting to me now.

"The golden age of SciFi is 12" is not a hard, universal, and exact rule. It's also not at all about saying you will love SciFi, but more that the fraction of it you do like will hit a peak somewhere around then.

You just happened to reliably spot one of the common problems earlier than most. (Possibly made worse if your source of SF was a bit behind the times and didn't have the stuff from the new wave.)

If Disney's Robin Hood didn't exist, someone would have to invent it.

Although I'd seen some of the classics like Dumbo and Snow White as a tyke, I'd not even heard of that particular Robin Hood until after I'd been in the fandom a while, and didn't get around to seeing it until another good while after that (I was similarly tardy with Starfox Adventures). I did catch The Fox & The Hound earlier though and had something of a crush on Tod, which no doubt had an effect on my choice of characters once I got involved with you disreputable lot.

I think this was a lot of people's first foray into the fandom before they even knew what the fandom was. Robin was also a lot of people's first crush.

I learned at an early age that I'm bisexual when I realized I had fallen in love with Robin Hood AND Maid Marian simultaneously.
