Does he write the notes on people? Is it like, the stink just floats in the air in the form of letters?

Been sort of playing with the idea that he writes them on a notepad and can either read them aloud like he's reciting them to someone, trick a victim into reading it and then being sorta zonked into acting out the narrative, or kissing the letter and blowing on it, making the paper disintegrate with his breath and sending thick scent tendrils out to sorta plunge into victim(s)'s nose(s). The latter requires him to actually know their name tho.

Ooh! The first one sounds fun! Sort of scripting out what his victims are going to do!
