It is to many Catholics around the world. It used to be common in what is now the United States. Before the British took it over and renamed it New York after the Duke of York, New Amsterdam used to have Saint Nicholas's Day mass, parades and what not on the sixth of December. After the capture of New Amsterdam, the British severely limited the celebration of the feast days of saints by the local Catholics. Since Sinter Klaas was the patron saint of the city of New Amsterdam the British allowed the continued celebration of Sinter Klaas, whom the British insultingly misspelled and spoken as Santa Claus in the English language, so long as it is on the celebration of Christ Mass, a.k.a. Christmas. A few decades after that the British and other colonies tried to even to stop the celebration of Christmas by even going as far as to fine whomever they found in the celebration of the Christmas season ten shillings (a quarter years average pay then). The people still refused and, like on the Howard Stern Show, had no problem paying. In the end Christmas and Sinter Klaas won. LOL. ^\/^.
