- I'm currently on What I call "Double Time"... Instead of Sleeping/Waking at 8/16 hours, Your sleep 16 and are awake for 32... It’s still a 2 to 1 ratio and isn’t at all harmful to your body as long as your getting full undisturbed sleep (in the dark, nothing to wake you up).
It's not hard to switch too... The only thing in your way is school or work schedules/routines to keep. Because of the way the math works, you’ll end up sleeping in this pattern:
- Sun, Tue, Thu, Sat, Mon, Wed, Fri, etc…
Thus, you’ll keep the same schedule, like sleeping 7pm-11am, but every other week the days alternate. Thus, if you need to be anywhere during those hours on any day of the week, it will be a problem every alternating week. So avoid solid scheduling for work or school during those times. 1-time events, if planed right, can become easier. (i.e. Road trips, parties, theme park tours, extra work shifts, etc.
As long as you have some point during each day with 16-18 hours for that double sleep, you can do it perpetually, but can easily be switched back to a normal 8/16 hour day.
I love it. It gives you a chance to see an entire day and a bit go by in full, instead of always being asleep during the same third of it every day.
- Just let your household know:
A: Make sure you keep nobody else awake who is on normal 8/16 sleep schedule in your household.
B: Make sure you won’t be disturbed, and that nobody or nothing wakes you up during your 16 hour sleep.
TIPS: Always use the rest room before sleeping, set your phone to silent, make sure to sleep somewhere you’re not disturbed by light (the sun WILL likely be up for some point of your sleep).
The hard part is the initial double-day... Staying awake for 32 hours if you only had 8 the night before is a bit rough. I don't suggest operating heavy equipment after the 16th hour unless you've done this before, and know how your body handles sleep deprivation.
The easiest transition is to sleep in (get 10, 12 or more if you can manage to stay asleep or roll over and go back to sleep as much as you can stand) the day before your 32 hour stretch. Make sure you figure out the bed/wake time... because if you start by waking up at 8am the first day, that means your first 16 hour bedtime will be at 2pm.
- Attempt this at your own risk (See warning at the top of the page). Sleep responsibly!
