Sooooooo, been a while since I made one of these, heh.
In spite of most of this year being a stressful, tumultuous time for me, I’m gonna focus on the positives as much as possible for this.
1. Death (the Puss in Boots: the Last Wish character: Watching that movie in January after having “ideations” the month before due to exhaustion from the existential treadmill has been a meaningful breath of fresh air for me for a bunch of reasons; the movie itself revived my dream of becoming a cartoonist by reminding me on why I want to be a cartoonist in the first place, which is because I want to create fun and meaningful things with a passion. With that, loosely similar to what the wolf’s doing in the movie, I feel like Death ironically saved me by reviving my passion and giving me more inspiration and drive to pursue my dream. While I have this epiphany about living my life full and living it well, if the grim reaper were to take the form of a smarmy yet conventionally horrifying anthropomorphic wolf, I’d also be content with my mortality, if that makes sense, heh. I’ve been so obsessed with that character that I even wanted to paint murals of him on walls, doors, and alleys. I feel that it’s safe to say that it’s become one of my favourite movies, especially after having watched it in theatre 9 times, breaking my own record of watching the same movie in a theatre by 6 of 7!
2. Cartooning and creating: like previously mentioned, I want to become a cartoonist again, a career I wanted to do since the age of 14. I’ve been working on my portfolio since I’ve watched that movie - doing each piece based on my research on what to put in a portfolio for when applying for either an animation college, or even a storyboarding or animation job at a major studio. For the new year I seek to work on my colouring so that it isn’t just sketches. I even started repurposing some of my kink OCs that I haven’t used for RPs for some time into something more cartoony and story driven. I’ve even been getting an influx of inspiration for synopses for short animations and VN.
3. Furry VNs: on the same month I finally got to watch my first narrated walkthrough of a furry visual - Adastra, which too also laid an emotional impression on me that I needed due to the things I’ve been going through on my personal life; being taken away by a hot, sweet, considerate, hunky chunky himbo space wolf to his home would be a huge honour and a big mood for me personally! Even though it has flaws, it still is my #1 favourite furry VN. The music itself along with its context never fails to make me bawl out in bittersweet tears. Adastra (and its spin-offs), Echo (and its spin-offs), Far Beyond the World, Sileo, and Password are the ones I’ve watched so far, and I do enjoy them all, even to the point of buying some of their merch online! I’ve even been inspired to write my own furry VN with a lesbian-leaning bisexual female lead sometime.
4. Closure from a relationship: in either January or February I had a falling out with a close friend of 10+ years who I’ve been in the cusp of a relationship with for 7 years due to some unresolved things during those years. Initially it did suck, yeah, but it was also bittersweet in a sense that I managed to get closure and therefore resolve from not only those wrongdoings, but also on if we should still have *that* type if future together; we decided that we weren’t meant for each other romantically, but we do remain good friends as well as clientele, having had great, fond memories together, especially from being there for each other as confidants, and both the story driven and kink-driven RP sessions we’ve had. With that, I’ve finally felt free, being able to put my thoughts on other things and talk to other friends more, which I should be doing more often.
5. The Northern FanCon: I had an absolute blast at that fandom convention; visiting local friends and making acquaintances and connections is something I always need to do more. I became a member of a medieval fantasy fan group called Shire of the Northern Grove, who meet up every Sunday for crafts, mock-sparring, and general geekery about Tabletop RPGs and fantasy creatures. I even aim to get into DND campaigns once they’re available again.
6. Putting my late grandmother to rest: over a year after her passing, my family and I started to move and ship all of my grandmother’s belongings before her trailer gets repossessed - one of the items being her urn, which I kept in my house throughout the whole summer as a part of a small shrine to her, to “talk” to her while having McDonald’s breakfasts like we used to. It wasn’t easy having to put her in a box in the earth last fall, but it was meaningful in a sense that we put some of her belongings in it; her reading glasses on account that she was both an avid reader and an aspiring novelist, and eagle feather to symbolize being naturally free, a glass standee with her favourite biblical quote with a rose on it, photos of her throughout her life including one that’s captioned “My best day ever!”, and some loose change out of the agnostic belief on not knowing if anything in which afterlife would require a form of payment. I still keep her wooden furniture in my house as they are practically heirlooms (and they do go with the cottage core theme I’ve been going for) - I ideally would like to read her hidden writings that were never published.
7. Queer volunteer group: I joined The Northern Queer Connection Society when I went to the annual queer picnic at the park last summer! A great time was had that day with that festivity. Basically the organization itself would help put up tents and banners among other things as a part of event preparation, block off the road with the use of traffic blockades to make access to the food venders easier and safer, assist in activities for the children, and patrol as security in case if anyone’s lost at the park. Since last autumn I’ve been going on the monthly bruncheons with the members of that organization where we talk about whatever while enjoying while enjoying the buffet.
8. First Aid and Food Safe: I achieved my certifications for level 1 on both of those last spring! I just gotta get level 2 on First Aid in early 2024 so I won’t have to redo the first level ever again, plus I’ll have a higher chance at getting a job soon!
9. Yukon trip: while I normally dread trips that involve fitness training, but this time around it was quite nice (aside from the training, obviously); got to explore downtown Whitehorse and have my own hotel room with a nice view. I was also kinda released to not having to attend my paternal uncle’s funeral on account of the sons making it a trainwreck during the eulogy and then being boozy loudmouths during their stay at my parents’ home.
10. I’M AN AUNTIE NOW: since Christmas, as a matter of fact! My sororal nephew Maverick was born early as a caesarean Christmas baby, born on December 25th, 2023! In a way I’ve always seen him as a son, my Christmas superstar. I aim to be the best cool auntie I can be for the new year. Even though that Christmas was uneventful, in a way he became my Christmas gift, having for once gained an immediate family member.
It’s also been the first time that I celebrated New Year’s Eve alone, which was nice in the context of not having to be around my parents nor my sister - though I’m hoping to celebrate my next one with some friends so that way it won’t have to be so lonely while also keeping away from family drama. While 2023 was far from perfect, it was a great year for networking, rediscovering myself in a way of knowing what I want while staying true to myself, decorating my house as more cottage themed and furry centric, and overall, progress in myself. I also not only got more commissions, I’ve gotten some of the greatest, most patient and kind clients I could ever ask/hope for. I’ve gotten to draw more, as well as get better at finishing them in a timely fashion. I also revived my ArtFight account so I can experiment with more OCs and species to draw! The music I’ve found both from the new hits and from the soundtracks of the VNs were also pretty stellar, too!
I hope to generally progress even better for the new year, and I wish every one of you too to have a great one - especially during the Hesr of the Dragon! <3
Happy New Year, everyone!!
