I may alienate a few viewers saying this, but answer me this question:
"Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin
What's the big deal?
It's a good song, yeah, but why the huge buzz surrounding it? It's not like "Freebird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, if that makes sense. So why is this song always heralded as the apex of guitar masterpieces?

A lot of Gen-Xers were raised with it as in the background as children so it became this iconic thing to try. Everyone tried it so it became trite and overdone.
