Daily reminder that, if you don't like something and nobody asked for your opinion, don't go about writing you don't like or hate the thing.
keep opinions like this
"I don't understand why/how people like this content, and I never will."
to yourself.
if you want to critique my art, feel free to do so. but this sort of word salat will land you on my blocklist past this point.
edit:
thanks for understanding where i am coming from, bless yall

Plus tell me about it with the anti-feral crews... Can fully relate to that.
On a more serious note, couldn't agree more.
i will next time draw cutesy stuff and write in impact font "i suffered a curse that burned my legs off, i am in intense pain, please end me"
https://x.com/o_Nitro/status/175140.....664726700?s=20
But that doesn't mean that people have to listen to it. And it also doesn't mean that you should always speak it out.
There's times and places for everything. And then there's times and places where you should keep things to yourself - like the one you stated.
I wish more people would understand that... It's really not that difficult is it?
PS: This was probably the most complicated way of saying that I fully agree lol. But I feel like I had to point out the core of the issue.
"Only because you can (say something) doesn't always mean you should (say something)"
I've gotten to the same point as you. The moment someone opens their mouth to complain about the content of a piece that isn't made for them they get to join the others in the block list. I don't know how much more I can just stare at their comment saying 'why would I fucking care?' when it wasn't even made with them in mind.
Though, tbh it was exhausting from the moment I got the first one in my notifs.
saw a negative comment, i will call an assassine on your ass!!!!
i am so jaded i stopped giving a shit. but i am back at the point where this stuff just tilts me more and more again
Now and then the Fandom gets a new Freshmen Class of people who feel the need to lecture or opine on something they dislike that crossed their eyeballs, and try to rally support versus that thing. It's cyclical, it happens with waves like the anti-feral thing because those people don't know history or weren't here the last time debates were had or people explained the difference between fantasy and reality to their predecessors.
And then also some people are just trolls.
In the end, it's worth it to keep in mind that these people are just a vocal minority and don't change a thing. They are without good social etiquette, have little to no good faith intentions behind their comments, and addressing them is like getting in a pig sty to wrestle the pig: You end up dirty anyway, and the pig likes it.
My method's become largely to acknowledge what they are and no more: an annoying consequence of modern internet's socially-engaged platform format for everyone, including people with dumb opinions--and blocklist or ignore. Don't elevate them because that's usually what they want: Validation by acknowledgment. And don't boost them to get others to snark at because nothing positive or constructive comes of it and oftentimes the person's a younger git who wizens up and realizes how dumb they were when they were younger.
this one in particular just jaded me so much. it's sad because this individual commissioned me/snagged a ych from me too. bewilderen to find out some people you interacted are so emotionally unintelligent. especially coming from this very individual.
but byeah, today i draw the line, past this point people are going in my blocklist
thank god for the block button. if they can't figure out how to use it, at least we can
Ugh.
Life is too short. Everyone likes what they like, everyone's tastes are different. Thank goodness for that because the world would be such a boring and stale place otherwise. These people definitely need to go back to the old school thing of minding their own damn business. And if you've got a problem with something, then move on to something they do.
Because regardless of anything, "I don't like this and I don't get why anyone does" technically applies to EVERYTHING. You know; some people don't like tomatoes. Fact of life, they need to learn to deal with it. :D.
(jk but thats still dogfood in my stupid opinion lmao)
I'd argue it matters more how frequent it is or whether genuine hate is being thrown your way.
Not understanding something/disliking it is perfectly normal and I don't think voicing your opinion on it is much of a crime even if it happens to be on something you created.
It doesn't take anything away from good art nor how much you poured into the work, so why should the person be immediately shut down from any further interactions?
If it's consistent then I would argue it deserves a block but over a single comment? Nah, that's shallow in my book.
You can just look past it, sure. But sometimes your submission box gets something that you open and you feel the need to say something. I don't think that makes them a horrible person at all.
Bringing such a point up without anyone asking is just a big downer. It may ruin the mood on something that many other people might otherwise enjoy. It's totally fine to state such an opinion when asked for, no doubt about that. But you wouldn't go to a party and shout "I HATE ALCOHOL" so everyone in the room hears it. It just spreads a bad mood where it really shouldn't.
If you have an issue with it, you can either tell someone directly (as in: note); or even better, why don't you phrase your opinion in an open way where people would be able to get involved? Instead of saying: "I don't understand why/how people like this content, and I never will." - Just say: "I've always struggled to understand what is appealing about this kind of content, can someone explain it to me?"
Where is the difference you may ask?
Well: The first one is a finite statement. It's done and dusted. It makes you seem ignorant because you just wanted to voice your dislike and ruin the mood and be done with it. Plus it's an indirect insult to people a la "You guys are weird for liking this".
The second one however is more open for actual conversation, it shows that you *engage* with the content and at least you *try* to get a grasp of it even if you do not like it - or perhaps you do like it once it's been explained to you?
If you don't want to be open, that's fine, but then don't bother other people with it either. It's about social decency here. Don't ruin something for others only because it's not your personal taste. THAT is the issue.
I myself don't see much a difference in those two statements and I'll go on a limb here and say most others would agree.
A ton of people that are not actively furries find it weird or disgusting, right? That hasn't stopped us from enjoying this sort of content so why is a comment like that any different?
Work it out or don't. I'm not saying you're wrong in that people are dick heads for no reasons what so ever but I do think it's fair to at least try and sort it out before you jump to conclusions and outright deny them an option to apologize or clarify their statement.
The art wasn't offered or directed at them, it was just *there*, and nowhere was it ever stated that something like that would ever happen.
Even though the meaning of those two statements is similar, the wording is the key difference here. Four sides model of communication: Factual Information, Self-relevation, Appeal and Relationship. If you break it down it's clear - especially in the self relevation and appeal parts.
It's a difference whether it comes from outside the community where this is (sadly) expected, or within the community where we want to get along. If we already have enough comments like these from the outside, we don't need them on the inside. That's the key difference here.
I do see your point in the "Apologizing or clarifying" department though, but I also understand that if it happens regularly (even if it's from different people), at some point you're just fed up with it. And if someone lacks the time and/or patience to deal with it, they don't have to. It's a tricky one.
I understand being fed up with it too. No one likes shit piling up, especially shit that brings you down.
Fair to say I have never dealt with this since I don't have an artistic bone in my body so I'm not capable of placing myself in Nitro's shoes ... but I like to think I would give people a few chances before I got rid of their ability to speak with me.
I'm thankful for your insight on this too. It'll forever be interesting to me to hear how people think about these particular subjects.
i am not saying you arent allowed to feel a certain way and in fact you are absolutely allowed to hate and have a disdain on something.
honestly people can hate the thing all day every day if they want. which is pretty miserable in itself, but ok.
but why on gods given earth would you take the time of your day, to click on my artwork and comment you dislike it? that's simply asinine. and for me its upsetting, making me pointlessly mad.
the artwork doesnt care if its hated, because the art is an unfeeling object. but i am not, and I made it. the connection between the art and artist is unseperable.
I wouldn't take whatever the person said to heart. We're all full of our own opinions and sadly we can't always agree on everything.
I do hope that whatever bull shit gets thrown your way doesn't prevent you from continuing your work.
but yeah okay, anyway. cheers
I don’t understand why people leave comments of themes they don’t like let people draw what they want
i received the comment i quoted on my journal on a recent artpiece, colored sketch for itaris, of the hurt dragon.
but regardless, it's asinine point blank to comment these things.
Just because you see fictional characters go at it, doesn't mean people in real life are like that as well. It's simply common sense.
If it ain't your fancy, remove it from inbox notifications, or unwatch artist and leave. It is very easy to simply not say something that no one asked for and move the fk on. 👌👌👌👌👌
It's one thing to have an opinion and voice it on occasion but a completely different thing to continue jabbing at someone for seemingly no reason other than to annoy them.
Grow up, please.
Twitter has destroyed global civilization in a way no other invention of man ever has. The atomic bomb didn't fundamentally change the way people at large behave towards each other.
Politicians continue to care more about holding our rights hostage in lieu of stemming the tide that's already drowning us all. At this rate, we'll have to depublicize our internet personae, keeping within smaller friend circles the way the internet had before. And with the enshittification of Google and the decline of social media overall, that feels more and more inevitable.
lol couldn't resist.
Seriously though, I get you. Any time I see one of those comments I'm like "OR... you could have just moved along" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
if you're otherwise legitimately at the point where attention from people being mad at you is somehow actually desire-able, then at the very least I pity you, but shitty circumstances aren't an excuse to make things shitty for other people.
