Funny enough, my patreon discord server is one of the best places I have made. It is way more tame, I feel far more support there and despite the rules being far less over there, the members are much more respectful.

Strangely enough, the people that support you financially, yeah, they like what you do and are usually pretty decent people. The random lurkers... they can be complete oxygen thieves. It's sad that the public discord was just giving you stress, but good to hear that there's still a place for people that actually care about you and the work you do.

I've yet to go to a paywalled/private server thats felt as trashy as most public servers I've been in.

That tends to be how it goes. It's why I don't have a public server. When there's some sort of barrier to entry, whether because it's a patreon server or an invite-only server, the behavior from members is just better overall.

Really sorry you had that experience, but, yes, having a more "curated" brand of guest does tend to keep out those who are immature and unwilling to follow rules, and whom need more moderation to stay civil. While it sucks that you had to deal with this, it's probably for the best you did so for your own mental health now, so as not to suffer any unneeded stress longer-term.

I've found open door stuff to be one of two ways, either no one does anything or they are unweildly and stressful.

My own Discord is the former as I have some very sharp rules. Bu means no one actually chats cause of trying to keep it focused on the world of my work.

Other places I've seen are basically ghost towns too, unless the public's giving places to meme about which are always the most active place. Feels like folks have jut forgotten how to communicate unless it's Drama or Memes.

Yeah, it is why I have no desire to make another one. At most I will make a private one or something but the Patreon Discord has been far more civil and kind.

Yeah, there were some cool people there. Met some great artists too, but the stress and negatives outweighed any positives. It felt like a daycare for stupid people over a server for fans and artists to just mingle and be a bit positive.

Imagine the scare of some who thought they were banned when it disappeared but I know how that goes. I remember one who did because of raiders

public discord servers are a total mess
fanboys, people who have different morals, others that are needy of attention, boycotters, these other group who tries to shove their preferences towards you since you havent put enough rules

im aware my server isnt very active due of my rules and what i want to do with it, and its better like that
these kind of people are people i already dealt with in my previous 2 failed servers so i already know what you went through from first hand even if never was there, (i dont really like joining into discord servers for the same reason)
just sad to know theres even more people who does this thing as the years passes, thing that makes me doubt if i should really open my server again to get more people in or not

what i can say is my rules really do a good job about filtering people those who does just want to see my art from those who wants to stir the chicken coop for attention and/or for their different morals

i used to be soft hearted, tolerant and permissive in my previous servers which led people to step on me, babysitting on others and them trying to change my rules to fit theirs because "its the norm", in my server i ve put very strict rules that caused tons of people leave, but at least its very quiet now and people are respectful enough towards each other since my intentions arent socializing either with my public

Wow. I didn't notice that until now. I mostly lurked on there because I liked seeing your stuff from time to time. Sorry that drama on there caused it's downfall. Invite-only servers are usually the better way to go.

It was ultimately invite only but people would send invites to people who weren't even fans to come in there. A lot of bad takes were done, people spreading nonsense and nobody with a modicum of desire to actually learn anything. Deleting it felt like the right choice.

It wasn't exactly a surprise. I said numerous times I wanted to delete it and that I wouldn't even give a warning when I did. Nobody took me seriously it seems.

Yeah saw some people who were from your server were surprised to see that your server is gone, some thought they got kicked out. One or two of them DMd about it while I was waking up.

Yeah, some came at me all pissed off thinking I banned them despite me making Twitter posts that I deleted it. All I have is the Patreon one now and that one has always been significantly more tame.

I didn't notice there was a discord server, but tbh, I feel the same experiences when I ran a discord server, not a artist, one for friends.

I subscribe to a YouTuber who had a discord server and people abused the crap out of it. Long story short, the place is so toxic he's planning to destroy it and start a new one for patrons only. Seems fair to be honest.

My Patreon server is really tame and honestly fun so yeah, he should do that.

Yeah, there were probably things I could have done to mitigate it but it seemed no matter who I banned, other morons would take their spot and I just got sick of it.

It's like a hydra, cut one off more and more will take their place. Once it starts it's hard to stop the cycle. We can only slow it.

It's only a burden for myself and having to deal with a lot of people getting in is not fun at all, despite how high my expectations were back when i created one.

Yup, that's how any kind of public community ends up being.

Yeah, an artist I’m following has a public server for a little while, but it was steadily getting filled with people that just wanted to start some nonsense. So she end of doing what you did and have a private one. A lot less chatty, but don’t have to worry about weirdos trying to start petty arguments and bad takes.

It is rather baffling the things people say and just believe that there is nothing wrong with it. There were some AWFUL takes in there over the years.

I went through the same problem when I made a public discord server. Just became a shit flinging free for all where even my mods joined in on causing problems. I learned my lesson and later on made a private one based around my Patreon where only those who are a fan of my work are allowed access. It is much more peaceful and positive.

I'm sorry that you had such a rough time on there. I hope that you will be able to find a good support group. That will help you feel happy. And that will help you feel comfortable to draw and create what you feel the most passionate about.

Patreon Discord has been really great honestly. Hardly any of the nonsense and it doesn't feel like a daycare constantly.
