Can you tell us the Ukrainian word that is being translated as "ammunition" and can you give an example of the sort of "ammunition" you are referring to?

I think there is a Ukrainian word that means something like "gear" or "equipment" that gets translated as "ammunition" by Google translate, which is not a good translation. I have seen this before with the phrase "horse ammunition" (where the person was referring to what would be called 'tack' or 'gear' in English).

You can't ride a horse without some horse ammunition, like a bit, reigns, saddle blanket, saddle and stirrups. LOL

We really use ammunition as a word describing special clothes and stuff that you are wearing. (or the horse like on your example)

This words are quiet similar in difinitions, but ammunition is more common

From the context of your Journal and what I had seen about "horse ammunition" in the past I figured that your friend probably needed gear/equipment to wear, not bullets to fire, but when you initially used the word "ammunition" in your Journal most native English speakers would have thought your friend needed bullets.

Last year i use translator not so often. This time it was my mistake because i know this word is foreign for our language and should have the same meaning in english. I was wrong, but the translator makes the same mistake xD

When i use google translate i usually check 2-3 times what it wrote hahahah

I'd been wondering about it for a while, since I've seen the seemingly odd use of the word "ammunition" several times. Pistachio helped me work out what the translation problem seems to be. It seems the Ukrainian word is "амуніція". I couldn't get that from just entering the English "ammunition" into Google Translate and translating it to Ukrainian but there was something close in Russian. When I put "ammunition" into Google translate and try to get the Ukrainian or Russian, амуніція is not even on the list Google translate shows me in Ukrainian and амуниция is not at the top of the list in Russian. However when I put "horse ammunition" into Google translate it gives me кінська амуніція for Ukrainian and конские боеприпасы for Russian.

I have to wonder what would happen if I tried to translate the English "horse tack" into another language using Google Translate, would it give the equivalent of "horse nails" (instead of "horse equipment" or "horse gear"), since the English word "tack" has multiple meanings.

Wouldn't be hard to find out! Though Google's engine has the advantage that users can correct mistranslations.

I remember an article from waaay back on one of the earliest experimental attempts at creating a computerized translator where they tested it by doing exactly that with a few phrases and passages, translating from English to another language then back to English again. The one that stuck with me was "The spirit was willing but the flesh was weak" which, to Russian and back again, became "The vodka was good but the meat was rotten."
