I fell in love with manga (japanese comics) waaaaaay before I even gave a shit about any other form of comic, except for some webcomics, but these were manga inspired anyway.
So, when I felt the need to make comics, too, what did I base them on? Not american comics, with their constant background and COLOR and detail and crap.
No.
I based it off of manga.
This is why I am NOW starting to care about color and constant backgrounds and crap like that. I guess I forgot that I live in America (or at least I post in the english-speaking area of the internet) where people want COLOR! BACKGROUNDS! If you don't have these things, you are not doing it right. It's like drawing the characters is the good part of the sandwich, but oh no, now you have to finish THE PART YOU HATE: The backgrounds, or else it fails.
Ugh, ok then YOU try drawing the fucking background. Have you ever tried? IT'S NOT FUN. It's ass. It's not like I'm getting fucking paid to do this comic crap. I do it cus it's fun and I enjoy it. Once it's not fun anymore, it's bullshit.
I am NOT (I repeat, NOT) posting this journal in angry response to being art criticized (I accept that so that I can learn to draw better.)
I'm doing it cus I wanted to make it absolutely fucking clear as to WHY I don't give a flying fuck about crap like color and goddamned backgrounds. It's something I've been meaning to do for a while now. I'm not trying to reach EVERYBODY cus clearly my crap isn't meant for all the assholes in the world.

Not saying you're doing anything wrong with your style, your focus is on the characters and you include enough background to set the scene. I do some pretty complex backgrounds for my comic, but it takes me 2-3 weeks per page. But that's what I like to.
"My art is meant to entertain -me-! If that means I draw a little to bribe/thank a few people it's still all the same path."
