Fictional Character Deaths hurt so much
Brace yourself for human ramblings.
This journal contains spoilers of the Stephen King novel The Talisman.
So I'm reading a Stephen King novel, The Talisman; and there is this beloved Werewolf character named Wolf and he becomes the gentle-giant protector and best friend of the main character, Jack Saywer.
There is something so endearing and loveable about the big guy; the way he talks, his innocence, his knowledge of smells, his loving heart. He is such a good guy. Even when he 'goes with the Moon' and becomes the full on Werewolf Beast, he firstly locks Jack up to keep him safe while he hunts (during which there is a pretty okay vore-ish description of his 3-day feasting on the wildlife of Indiana).
Then later they both get picked up by the police and sent to a wayward boys school were they are relentlessly bullied and Wolf comes to Jack's aid several times, much to his own pain and weakening state of not being in his own world.
Finally Wolf Beasts out again and goes on a rampage, killing bullies and coming to rescue Jack so they can escape together, unfortunately he is shot and killed by one of the other boys, but not before Wolf finishes him off.
He dies in Jacks arms. His body transforms back into his human-ish form and fades away... and it's devastating and heartbreaking and as much as Jack has to mourn his best friend, I as a reader am suffering a horrible sense of loss too and it got me in a real sour and depressed mood.
When the death of a fictional character in a book really guts you 😔
I don't know how Jack is supposed to go on without Wolf. I'm so sad.

It's especially painful when, as you described, they die for the much less interesting main character. I've never read The Talisman and now I'm not sure I want to.
I will read on though, I've got 40% left, I will make it though somehow, and I'll let you know if it is worth reading.
