I prefer facial expressions. I just find it more fun for the transformed character to still be visually present and active.

Def depends on what they've been TF'd into. If the item has no face, then maybe using cartoony expression notifiers like the annoyed nerve bulge, sweat drops, etc. That or a chibi-expression. Basically, the item having a face is a good shortcut to having full expression, but even without a face, I still like having some insight into the character's emotions through other means :)

It does depend on what the inanimate object is, and what the story calls for.

My default, though, is to have a facial expression. I also prefer for the expression to be happy since I think first of inanimate transformations as fun things that are enjoyed even when it's inconvenient. But I know that doesn't make sense for every story.

I like it when they're forced to look happy/have no expression but they are embarrassed or want the people around to help them

Def facial expressions! Even if they just end up with a silly Ditto smile, it makes it so much fun to look at! I kinda like a very absurd expression of distress to be followed by a very simple and dumb looking smile :P

It depends on the individual and the experience. A blank expression works, as does some panic, worry, or embarrassment. Sometimes even the idea that the fur is enjoying it is enjoyable for us, too.

The funny thing about inanimate TF's in particular, is that 'expression' can come through in many ways. That that point it depends on what you define as a character's "expression". Something as simple as an anger mark or sweat bead can tell the audience plenty of what they need to know. You can get really creative with how certain emotions come through depending on the flavor of the TF (no pun intended). Maybe someone got turned into an assortment of clothing based about their color scheme, and certain socks and shirts just so happen to line up to make an annoyed face. As for which I prefer? I would say no face for the majority of the time.
