Glen Keane is a masterful character artist. Besides the Beast, Glen's known for designing Ariel, Aladdin, Pocahantas, Fagin from Oliver and Company, Basil and Ratagan from The Great Mouse Detective, Marahute (pronounced MA-RA-HOO-TAY) from The Rescuers Down Under, and he's currently working on the next Disney animated film Rapunzel.

What's interesting about the sketches in the first head sketch from the top link in this journal is that we see Glen experimented with different animals, then combined certain parts of them to form Beast's head.
