Blaster Master~!

...was recently added to Nintendo's Virtual Console service.
If you've got 500 Wii Points laying around, and can handle the physical presentation and difficulty of old games, you should totally check this one out -- it's one of my very favorite games ever, and I'd recommend it to anyone~ >3
You play as this kid who's got this big tank-car, and you go through a Metroid-esque side-scrolling world, blasting enemies with cannons and missiles and lightning bolts, exploring around and finding areas where you can set out on-foot and go into top-down view to fight the bosses face-to-face, acquiring items for the tank to increase firepower or mobility, and explore new areas and places you couldn't go before~ All with a pretty sweet soundtrack, and truly classic sound effects! There is no innate save or password function, however with the Wii's state-save thingy when you return to the Wii menu, you functionally get one.
It's pretty ball-bustingly hard at times, but for the right reasons. <3

If they didn't add a save feature to the VC version, I'd recommend skipping it. Play the ROM on emulator instead and use save states. Makes the game a lot more fun! :)
For those few out there who somehow did -not- play this game when it was available before, or bother grabbing it on an emulator, you -really should- give this one a try! Yes, it's difficult to the level of mind-numbing until you figure out where to go, and a few bosses are a pain in the -you know what- if you don't know the pause grenade trick, but sometimes a challenging game that's challenging by -design-, not cheap tricks, is -worth it- to see to the end! If you really must, on bosses 1, 2, 4, 6, -maybe- 5, when your grenades land on them and cause flashing damage, -pause the game- with the game's pause, not the Wii's. You'll hear the music still go, and the boss will -keep flashing- like it's still being hit. Hold that for a few seconds, and the boss should be dead when you unpause. It's one of the major glitches in the game. Also always keep Jason's gun fully powered when he wanders inside buildings and such, full power will go through walls and enemies. Insanely helpful!
This game's ending is one of less than ten games total that actually brought me to tears when I first saw it. Joyful, but still tears. Just like my movies, whenever -that- happens, I don't care what it is, it's a permanent part of my collection. Period. I can't remember -everything- off the top of my head, but World 5 is -all- the way to the bottom in the first chamber, the lower path in the one that connects to, then up high.. I forget the other part for now. Also, Jason's gun can hit the little swimming guys from a slightly -higher- position than their guns can hit him. Remember that, as it's one of the most difficult parts of the game.. going through most of a tank-level underwater.. with just Jason! I can't tell you how many times I died down there before I discovered that higher-than-their-guns trick!
Also don't forget about your sub-weapons.. down + fire while in the tank! They don't seem like much, but trust me there's a lot of cases, like lightning around the little radiator people, where it's just plain -invaluable-. Hmm. No I don't remember the path through the sewers.. it just kinda comes to me each time I actually play. I can however sit down now and go through the entire game, without once getting lost, and die very few times except versus the final form of the final boss (that guy's just a bitch, I'm sorry, it has to be said!). It's all worth it though.. memorable, catchy music, play control that's tight and responsive, challenge the way it -should- be, and all kinds of cool power-ups and hidden places to find, for both tank -and- Jason. Plus an actual -ending- to work for. I can't think of a modern game that can say -all- of that at once! The fact I've rambled for like 4 paragraphs on this subject might also just say something.. since this isn't even my journal, lol! Go get it, trust me. Bang against it however many times it takes to figure everything out, then cruise through it like me when you want a cool trip down memory lane, or just a great experience slipping through a beautiful title!
More useful than that, though, is the pausing thing you can do in the last area -- pausing and unpausing the game recenters the screen perfectly on your vehicle, which will oftentimes make hidden enemies or enemies that was just off-screen visible so they can't trick you~!
And yeah, I admit, I can't beat the game without using the bomb glitch. x3
I do! I've owned Fester's Quest for as long as I've been alive (well almost) and while the game had a lot of very poor design problems and a difficulty that was for all the wrong reasons (Only two hits, and the max-healthups are totally invisible in an impossible to navigate room building?) But the music form it was totally sweet -- in fact, the cartridge had extra hardware added in to allow three extra channels (one square, noise, and another external sound effect channel). Sunsoft was notable for their awesome music~!
Also, notice how Sunsoft games reuse sound effects? In Blaster Master, Fester's quest, and Journey to Silius, the noises for being hit, shooting, and picking up items is the same. x3
