my personal autism tips for myself (that you can steal)
these are things i do to help myself as a disabled person! (physically disabled and i have autism! this focuses on the autism though)
1. keeping track of energy levels - this can be done mentally and by remembering what tasks i've already done today!
2. recognizing behaviors - this is soothing for me, and partially why i'm making this post
3. making lists and budgets! its soothing to have everything i could need where i need it!
4. stimming whenever i need to unless i genuinely can't - places where i can't mean in front of people i dont trust excluding in public! in public, i dont care, and usually if i'm in public i'm with people who can help me - who would defend me if someone said something. people i dont trust means family who i dont feel comfortable around! instead i will stim in more 'acceptable' ways, like bouncing your leg or something! sometimes i rock back and forth without realizing - but i think thats more accepted in my family at least. if i really need it, i leave to go to the bathroom.
5. headphones and my phone are essential items! optionally my cane if i'm going out somewhere when i need it. headphones are important to block out outside noise and control my enviroment sound wise.
6. making sure i have safe foods near me! along with always making sure i have a drink of some kind - usually mtn. dew, which is my number 1 safe drink, but any pop is good for me!
7. making sure i've taken care of my needs - this means eating, drinking, going to the bathroom, and being clean! sometimes it slips my mind, especially if i'm deep DEEP in a hyperfixation where i don't move for 10+ hours
8. i try to talk to at least one person outside of my family every day, which is easy because i have my loving boyfriend who checks on me - but it can be hard espiecally during hyperfixations!
9. engage in special interests - right now, yugioh has been a comfort and i make sure to give myself time to partake in it to help myself regulate!
10. plan, plan, plan. I need a plan - i love plan! it can make thing a lot easier for most autistic people to plan! but not everyone is good at making plans, and thats okay! its something you can work on! i love working on it! i learn more everytime i do it!
11. having consistent background noise can help, because silence can make it easy to spiral for me! game grumps is a comfort for me, but true crime is also good for me as true crime is another special interest! another thing i'd recommend is the youtube channel SciShow, they make educational content that can be comforting for other autistics1
12. learning limits, and learning limits can change! some days are easier than others for most disabled people. shit changes daily! understand yourself and advocate for what you need!
13. internal dialogue can be nice. its where i make most of my lists, which comforts me insanely well.
14. rest when you can - every time you can! rest is so important. it doesnt mean sleeping, it just means lying there and chilling out for a bit! be gentle on yourself when you can! as long as you can get the essentials done, you're good!
thats all i can think of for now, this was more of a self soothing thing for myself but i hope its comforting for anyone else!! <333
