Rent-a-Friend -- Yes, this is a real business
    a year ago
In the "I couldn't make this up if I tried" category, I was cruising Wikipedia and I saw some unusual entries.
Like 'Rental Family Service' from Japan which is just what it sounds like - people you hire to pretend to be your family at various social events. I'm left wondering if this is funny or just plain sad. I mean, if this were still the 80's or 90's, I could see a sitcom or comedy film done where some guy hires a woman and some kids to pretend to be his family to keep out of trouble with his boss or to get a raise ("I need to support this family, sir!"). Hey, the Three Stooges pretended to be war orphans for a millionaire whose trendy wife wanted to get in on the latest WW2 fad. Of course that all ended very badly.

And of course America has its own version, Rent-a-Friend.

Yes, you can actually make money pretending to be someone's friend. I do wonder about the sort of people who are customers for this service. Maybe I've seen too many comedies and horror movies where you find out the hard way that your 'new friend' is some sort of lunatic or sadistic maniac.
This also reminds me of the standard furry fiction plot #2, or maybe 3, of 'furries created to be sexual partners for lonely and deserving nerds like the author'. 'Furries created as sexual partners for rotten horny creeps' is probably standard furry plot #4 or 5. What if said furry wasn't made to be a bed toy, but to provide companionship for someone who desperately needs it? Like, say, someone who is both elderly and has a sizeable estate? Of course they decide in the end to leave everything to 'My only friend Fuzzy'. And the human relations of the deceased decide they want their slice of the pie, and...
I can remember years ago seeing a well-done story with a female dog furry who was created to be the companion and sorta-nurse to a youngster with some serious health issues. It was very sweet and tragic ending with the kid dying and her committing suicide when she realized that nobody needed or wanted her any more.
