Artists that are hard to follow....
Recently there was some talk about a potential bill, so that when an online game dies, its creators would be obligated by law to hand over the code for it, so fans could run fan-servers for the game, preserving said work for the future.
I do like the general idea of that law, but at the same time see why companies would be very much opposed to it. Why would a company that earns money by people playing their games, let people play something with them without getting a penny from it? There’s zero profit, and gives these people less incentive to play your current and brand new titles. But there's a different context where there’s more to speak of, like when a studio decides to NOT release their movie on any DVD, streaming service or anything at all, and ensure it's not available anywhere, all because they claim they MIGHT want to release it someday and make money from it…. They just don't want to do it now, and might never do so. There, I see it as far more clearly unfair, as movies or TV shows are there to provide entertainment for a much shorter time…
But something on a much smaller scale of an issue involves Furry Art.
You follow someone, you love their own, however things become ever more frustrating, as the artist decides to get very selective with what they post and where. They do a lot of commissions and decide to never post them on their account, with only the clients (that you don't know) posting them who knows where…. Still, as much as I hate that, it's one of the more basic things.
There’s been artists where I had to follow them on several platforms… FurAffinity, Twitter, BlueSky, Weasyl, Patreon…. All because they didn’t feel like uploading everything to every place , and neither did they feel like making it clear that they are indeed so spread out. I thought I was up-to-date with one guy, but then it turned out that he also had a Telegram channel where they posted more exclusive art, with an entire 6 year long backlog. I wasn’t feeling like I found some golden treasure chest with more great art, I was just angry over how many hoops a fan has to jump through to see their work.
But then of course there’s “the thing”, when out of nowhere they decide that they feel depressed and just delete their whole gallery. One can throw out all the “It’s their art, and they have the right to do with it as they please” arguments at me as they want, and it won’t convince me to accept it. You don’t want to draw any more? That’s fine, go ahead… but why does it have to mean that all you created has to be purged??? No matter what reasons one may have for it, even if I were to feel compassion, it would never result in me just shrugging things off and going “Well, I used to love these pictures, but the artist had their reasons, so I can’t be mad for them being gone forever!”. It simply feels so disrespectful towards one’s fans, especially if they had to overcome so many obstacles to find these images in the first place!
You claim you have ownership of it? Well, the way I see it, your work means NOTHING to you! All these pictures hold no sentiment to you, when you just throw them away like that. Meanwhile to us fans, they hold a lot of meaning. We treasured them…. They mean a lot to US!
This is where I’d wish there was some safety net to prevent things like this from happening, but I know it’d be harder to deal with, especially when giving websites more control over the art that’s being posted, as it would certainly open doors for other shady practices…. So it’s not like there’s an easy solution to all this…..
In the end I just wrote all this to vent some frustrations after another artist that I followed did this very thing, and that’s that. However, with that said….. I had all of their work saved on my hard-drive. I saw them delete a picture or two before, and became skeptical of them keeping their work online in the future… I expected them deleting their whole account someday, and so I prepared myself.
This isn’t the tale of a sad and frustrated fan who got back-stabbed…. This giraffe here sits in a comfy chair, next to a warm fire-place with a wine-glass full of coca-cola, and is enjoying a bunch of lovely pictures. He loves the art, while despising the artist as a person. If he were to ever meet said artist, he’d raise his long giraffe neck, and would look at said person with a smug look on my face… “You did exactly what I predicted you would do… You are a better artist than I ever will, however despite my issues, I will remain the stronger person.”
