What exactly does 'Being a Furry' mean to you?
I noticed people have different definitions of 'being a Furry'.
For example, my fursona isn't supposed to be my "inner-self", it's simply really just a character I created that would be me (if I were an anthro). Someone I know said that their fursona was who they really were on the inside.
That probably makes no sense, but I don't know how else to explain it.
So Yeah. Is it just me who thinks like this?
I'm really just curious to see what other think.

They're just avatars, otherwise, if you REALLY think its you, then you've lost touch with reality completely.
My being a tiger is a bit more personal than just an animal I admire, but it's not my inner self. It's just an animal that has been kind of...just THERE in my life.
hum
It's a label! Whaaat is a label?
It's defines something. In this case, a personal label, or a label about a person that is. (Usually, I guess!)
After that point it's up to the person themselves how powerful a label is :U
Is a label something you live or is a label a facet of you? Or something else, if you care for it to be?
Labels are facets for me!
I carry a furry label, but I'm still Jeshua above all, just as I carry the labels neckbeard, or the attribute of having hazel eyes.
(Which is from birth, and having a neckbeard is not nor is uh 'being a furry', but regardless none of them define me.)
As for that label, I put it there! And so it means what I want!
In this case, I have a furry label because I created a character, for personal brain stimulation and entertainment in general, because I have lots of free time and I thought it was fun. Still do.
I like it to share attributes of me (height, weight, eye color) and yet have it's own (uh, not human?) so that it is unique, as well as serve as an icon to convey abstract ideas.
WUOAH I TALK TOO MUCH
you made it so simple <3
My Fursona is partly who I am on the inside and partly who I am to people I know, but have to hide bits of myself from for fear of being ridiculed. It's a way to express myself without having to explain everything or be ashamed. It's also an outlet for things I would never do in in real life.
I chose that particular animal because I seem to identify best with wolves. I carry some of the same characteristics.
Plus, it's fun!!
But I also feel mines more like how I WANT to be, how I would see my self, his personality, confidence ect. Alot of which I lack. so it gose to him.
Just so happens hes a raptor, a dionsaur I like and admire.
Funny how other fandoms are just weird while ours is freaky.
Now, I think some people jump the gun with assuming that every person that talks about "inner animals" and "true representations of self" is a moron: you still have to allow for animist religions. I.E.: I know a guy who's a Native American shamanism practitioner. He believes in spirit animals and the like, and though people like him are more than admittedly in the minority, it's important to not disrespect their beliefs,.
I'm into martial arts, so is my fursona. I have glasses, he has an eye-patch. I sort of... limited him to my limitations and abilities I guess, but I certainly don't walk around thinking I'm a coyote ninja. That would be a little weird.
My 'sona is really just a way for me to represent myself to the furry world. She's how I draw myself. Her scruffy fur is based on my frizzy hair, her body is shaped like mine, she wears my exact wardrobe, her personality is my own... She's just what I'd be if I weren't human, I guess. She's definitely not an "inner animal" for me; I understand myself to be fully human, and besides, I'm sure there's some other animal besides a lion that would "fit" my personality better. Heh.
That said, I do tend to walk on my toes often, and occasionally I fight back an urge to drop on all fours. It's just so fun to identify with the animal kingdom sometimes!
