After seeing a journal from an artist I followed about some random stranger harassing them for art trades, I just wanted to make a journal about my honest stance on art trades.
Back in my DA days, when I was a teenager, I've been on a similar position as the aforementioned harasser by going around, asking any artist I followed for an art trade, though most of them are either too busy with paid commissions or just won't accept them from strangers in favor of their friends they've trusted (both of which is understandable and will be explained later on).
The first art trade misstep this one kemono artist that I followed, Lylac, who I did trades with. Though we did some without any trouble, we eventually stopped doing so after our third trade (she even stated in the description of her half of our third trade that she hopes it'll be the last trade she'll be doing with me). Seeing that she's fed up with me asking for trades at this point, I made my promise not to ask anymore.
The second art trade incident I had was with Lilandra-Surge, who approached me for a trade via one of my DA journals. After quite a back-and-forth of comments (all public instead of, y'know, PMs), we agreed on our trade. Surge did her half in a timely manner (despite the glaring use of a lens flare effect), but when I did mine, it was a very sloppy non-colored pencil sketch of her OC. So what did she do? She posted about this on an /i/ (invasion) board on 7chan and got all the 7chan trolls to flame me over this. To rub salt into the wound, Surge happens to be a DA troll (which I didn't even realize). She also recolored her half of our admittedly disastrous trade (of my old Klonoa OC that I didn't like anymore for obvious reasons) and jokingly made it her OC, which got her banned.
My last art trade incident I ever had on DA was with a Sonic fan artist named Sayacat. Though she did her half in a timely manner, I (on the other hand) took my sweet time to work on mine, which resulted in her asking me about it on my DA page (to which I responded that it'll be done soon, which she understood). A few days or weeks later, she came back on my DA page and asked my about it again. Only this time, she's impatient and wrote this in a demanding tone: "Seriously, where's my art trade?" This resulted me in rushing the the whole thing (all while drawing her Sonic OC as a kemonomimi catgirl instead of a Mobian cat) and sent it to her. I secretly blacklisted her from trading with me anymore for putting pressure on me since then, but in the end, I felt extremely bad about producing rushed, low-quality art in exchange of high-quality stuff.
On that topic: You never, ever put pressure on artists where they're taking their time on their half of trades. Because that's extremely rude and it can result in rushed-out images, not to mention you getting on the permanent blacklist. The same goes for commissions or requests.
Though art trades are extremely few and far between in the art community, there's a few people going about, harassing artists for trades (similar to how people pester artists for free art in general, which, understandably, is a blockable offense). They even unfairly screw others out of trade by either not doing them altogether or (even worse) tracing/copying other people's works. Not cool, guys.
In conclusion, the above story and issues are the reasons why I rarely do art trades with anyone except with those who I know and trusted well enough (like with close friends or if I absolutely love the artist's work).
I also participated in this year's Art Fight (which is an art trade game in which you "attack" or "friendly fire" other artists with art of their OCs and vice-versa) and every went smoothly, save for my tablet pen breaking, which forced me to stop. Art Fight's also one of those moments I can do trades with others by drawing their cool, appealing characters.
So the moral of my art trade story: Never harass other artists for art trades. It's quite rude and off-putting for random strangers to pop up, asking for trades when most artist either only do trades with close friends/other people they know and trust or just outright avoid doing trade altogether. Once again, the same goes for free requests. Also, when asking for trades, ALWAYS show examples of your works so they'll decided whether to trade with you or not.
And finally, please respect other artists wishes if they politely tell you "no" on your trade offer. Don't be a jerk about it. Period.
Thanks for understanding my stance on this.
