Strawpage Response Post #22: Don't Have A Cow!

(For clarity, this is marked #22, since I'm including artwork submissions I've posted & questions to which I've responded.)
QUESTION
What do you think of the That's so Raven episode where Raven and Chelsea turned into cows? Anything you'd change?
My Response
I don't know how much of a "rite of passage" it is for a TF fan to have seen this episode. But believe it or not... I've never seen this episode! I was more of a Nickelodeon kid with a hint of Cartoon Network, and thus That's So Raven (and most other Disney shows) were rarely on my radar.
I HAVE previously gotten the gist of the TF from fan-art and re-posted screenshots, though. But as of posting this journal, I went out of my way to look up the episode so I could answer this properly! The following is more or less my "live" thoughts from watching the full episode, re-worded to flow a bit better as a journal.
I wasn't aware the TF trigger was a wishing potion; that's such a classic idea (technically TWO classics in one), so I quite like that. Though it feels odd how the "No-Cow" pin falling in AFTER the wish activates still applies a cow modifier to it. Would've made more sense to me if it snuck its way in there before/during the magic words being read out.
I also didn't know this was a slowburn TF! I SUPER love TFs that progress more slowly, giving the victim(s) time to really process and deal with each individual part of their changes one by one. And I commend this episode for doing exactly that for the next few minutes, feeling & touching their ears and tail as they twitch and swish. Makes it feel so much more real! And even further bonus points for the vocal changes with accidental moo'ing :D
The snouts growing in next & hay-eating instincts are both lovely ways to progress it further. I'm a tad disappointed the hooves just kind of *appear*, but I suppose the other body parts did the same so I can't really complain. I will say, I could've done without the long tongue & cud-chewing bits... Not terribly nasty, but definitely toeing that "icky" line for me :v
I'm certainly disappointed there wasn't one last change where they were still mostly human in stance, but bigger and wider like cows & with new udders (though I understand why THAT detail was excluded from a family-friendly sitcom). Cutting straight to them being real cows with wigs feels like a minor cop-out, but alas. Also would've been a tad cooler if they were just communicating mentally (Raven IS a psychic, after all), rather than having those edited-on mouths to talk to each other. Lastly, while I was certain this wasn't going to be canon, I do kinda wish this was a TF that ACTUALLY happened and got undone (maybe they narrowly cast an "undo" wish and say the magic words, before they become unable to say more than "moo"), rather than it just being a vision. I do enjoy temporary TFs, after all, but it doesn't really count if it never actually happened >:D
Overall, it's pretty good! Just a few small changes/removals I would make, but otherwise, I can see why this is an iconic official TF in some peoples' minds. The makeup team did a really good job getting the actresses to look the part, and lots of the in-betweens give great "mid-TF step" or "stuck mid-TF" vibes. Plenty of little niches hit here that appeal to TF fans all over.
I do wonder if this would have been formative, or otherwise stuck out in my mind more, had I seen it as a kid. As is, the main cartoons I remember pushing me toward a TF-awakening were SpongeBob SquarePants ("I Was A Teenage Gary" my beloved >//////////<), Danny Phantom (easily the superpower I want most), and Ben 10 (didn't watch the actual show much, but I learned a lot from its games & activities online). I'm certainly curious if anyone reading this has more experience/fondness with the Raven cow TF.
Many thanks for your question, anonymous! <3

Just looked it up, and hadn't expected it to be live-action based on your description. But it looks like they had an equally-fun time with makeup and/or CGI, based on this screenshot: https://antifandom.com/femalevillai.....nshot_9858.png
