Strawpage Response Post #23: Media Lacking TFs

Another question submitted through my Strawpage account! Always love getting these, so a pre-emptive thank-you to whoever sent this in!
QUESTION
Are there any shows/games/other media you wish had tf but didn't feature any? Or maybe one that had one or two tfs that could have used more. For example, I wish HTTYD had dragon tfs or a body swap episode with Hiccup and Toothless or something like that.
First off, I really like your proposal at the end there. I think I only saw the first HTTYD movie, and while it was good, it's not one I've gone back to. But adding TF into the movies/show weirdly does sound like something that should be up its alley. Shame it apparently never happened! Now then...
My Response
This is certainly a tricky one! I'm shockingly out of the loop on most TV shows or movies, unless I watched it as a kid. Most of the ones I remember seeing either had a good handful of TF or body alteration in them across various episodes (e.g. Fairly Oddparents, SpongeBob), or are things I wouldn't think really need/would work with TF (e.g. Rocket Power, the movie Holes).
After mulling it over a bit, here are a few various shows/movies/games that came to mind that might fit the question.
- The movie Cats and Dogs: A movie I watched a couple times as a kid, I think. If I recall correctly, the main plot of the movie was about a scientist trying to cure pet allergies, and the evil cats wanting to reverse-engineer it to make the world allergic to dogs. I feel like that had some room to backfire and create a serum that turned people INTO dogs. Even seeing just one person change would've been awesome!
- CatDog: With the two main character conjoined together, I'm surprised there wasn't some sort of one-off episode where two other characters got stuck together. Or... maybe there was? It's been so long that I don't remember. I do recall one episode where Dog got super-buff while Cat remained normal, and another where Cat and co. had to go inside Dog's mouth to fix some issue inside their shared body. The show certainly wasn't *entirely* devoid of weird TF and TF-adjacent stuff.
- Fairly Oddparents: I can think of at least 10 examples where Timmy got himself transformed in some small or large way. Frankly, I'm mildly bummed there wasn't even MORE TF in that show! But I suppose the show was ultimately about Timmy growing up and learning through wishes, rather than trying out a whole lot of unique bodies. As is, I wanna give a shout-out to the episode "Cheese & Crockers". The whole concept of that episode being Timmy half-fusing himself with various things (e.g. becoming a skateboard-taur) is the stuff of niche TF dreams for me <3
- Super Mario Galaxy: My favorite game of all-time. I probably wouldn't have even thought of this if it weren't for the Boo Mushroom in it. I LOVE how it's a rare power-up that fully changes Mario's entire body (rather than just changing his clothes), and really wish more games in the series did transformations like that. Mario Wonder was great for TF stuff, and Mario Odyssey practically thrives on it (though Odyssey arguably does "possession" instead of "TF"; at least the aptophilia is still there).
Way back before Mario Galaxy 2 came out, I recall daydreaming about some sort of underwater power-up for Mario where he becomes some manner of cartoony shark to easily navigate swimming levels. Instead of adding some cool new transformation like that, Galaxy 2 instead REDUCED the number of times you get to use the Boo Mushroom :(
- The movie Space Jam: Another one I watched as a kid on VHS, probably more than any other one. My mind goes to the scene at the very end of the movie where Michael Jordan stretches his arm to reach the net for the game-winning dunk. I thiiiiink there were a couple other cartoony brief body alterations done to him throughout the movie; at the least, I recall a side character getting flattened on the court. More TF-type stuff would have been very welcome.
I could probably think of more if I really sat on it, but I also don't want to bloat this response too much. Hope that satisfies your curiosity, anonymous! Thanks for your question <3
