Tooth problems part deux

Saw a dentist today.. it cost me $73 for him to say "Oh yeah, I bet that hurts!" and gave me a scrip for vicoden and antibiotics. three hours after taken the vicoden it still hurts an ungodly amount. in fact I think it's getting worse.. wtf did I do to deserve this?
If the teeth are hurting a helluva lot, a cavity ate it's way down to the nerve or it's been impacted and the tooth needs to be pulled out (the 'cheaper' route) or root canal'd.
It can't possibly be just an infection (the gums). Either he's stalling you for an operation, or it really is an infection (a bad one).
hm.. It's hard to tell. I know I felt it worse when my root canal failed and the tooth had to be taken out (from fracture). I remember my other cavities not really feeling that badly.
