I Love Sprite Fights (& Our Barfing Cats)
General
So besides FA being out of commission for a whole week, whats been keeping me?
Aside from Livewire*, I've mostly been better managing how I go about social media as well as managing... cats.
Thats right, we have two cats, Ippo and Baby. Ippo is a white scraggly little bastard. A tiny lap-cat that likes to play and LOVES food; a little too much even. We've treated them for tapeworms out of suspicion, and yeah they definitely had them. They're gone now for sure, and I don't need to explain how we know that (it's gross).
Baby is a fluffy black mass that hides away most of the day and loves to stare with her big yellow eyes. They're getting off from being VERY sick, finally started walking around again a day or two ago. They're still a little shakey on their feet, so it might be a bit before they're fully recovered (and willing to be picked up). She's the big boss.
Anyway do any readers recall sprite fights? Super Mario Bros. Z, Death Battle, the like?
Maple Riot was hosting a "Vs Masterhand" collab, and seeing their announcement for it gave me a sudden, near-maddening bout of inspiration to contribute. Sprite fights have had my entire being in a chokehold since starting the Livewire remake I couldn't let the opportunity to do it, FOR REAL, pass by. I had to drop absolutely everything and make an entry, no matter what.
Small problem: This is the first time I'd ever gotten my hands on sprite-fight sort of animations, and I don't have any of my own sprites.
Livewire and it's cutscenes (which are all done btw) had been a godsend to priming me to this sort of thing, and keen readers might ask: Why not use the sprites from Livewire to fight Masterhand?
All of the sprites are vector based; not the pixelated goodness you traditionally see. I can't just have FNF Flint fighting a PNG of Master Hand, as easy as it would be to import the sprites- or wait...
Would it really be easy to just import the Livewire symbols and use those?
Flint, and all of the other updated Livewire sprites are put together in a way I can only describe as "a complete clusterfuck" Some use bitmaps for parts, some use Groups until I learned that Symbols are leagues better (and much more stable for CS5,. the file structure is a fucking joke- all parts of a character were seperate symbols. So rather than one symbol for 5 different hands i had 5 symbols for 5 different hands. You get the picture? Its nigh incomprehensible, even for the fucking lunatic who made it (ME).
These are basically unusable for a quick and easy sprite fight unless I took the time to reorganize everything, and I can't even do something as simple as replace the LW bitmaps with vectors. I'd have to painstakingly reanimate those parts after making new ones because I just used the raw bitmaps: not symbols.
So fuck it; I made an entire spritesheet from scratch for Sky for ONE collab entry, put together new symbols for him and his parts. We have sky_main, sky_limbs and sky_head, each with a large array of sprites to switch from on the fly that could be externally edited and updated with ease. I can even reuse these symbols for other sprite-related animations, or add onto them with more poses, hands, expressions, etc.
Hows the submission going?
It's already done.
Yeah, all it took was a week and a half and I finished the entire entry; Sky's new sprites, the drawn background, music and all.
Look forward to seeing that on the official Maple Riot channel.
As for how I feel about it... It's my best animated work.
The speed at which I made it too almost scares me, and it's because I know I could be faster.
*Livewire is an FNF project who's development has taken a bit of a hiatus, you've probably already read the reason why.
