The Weiner 500
We just watched the inaugural running of "The Weiner 500," a pre-race entertainment for the Indy 500.
In case you haven't heard about it, all six Oscar Mayer WeinerMobiles ran a two-lap race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. They received new livery to represent the six regions of the US--New York Dog for the Northeast, Chi Dog for the Midwest, Slaw Dog for the Southeast, ChiliDog for the South, the Sonoran Dog for the Southwest, and the Seattle Dog for the Northwest. Each vehicle is named for the iconic hot dog from each area.
It was hilarious, and mostly because the announcers, drivers, and everyone else involved played it perfectly straight, through all the hot dog buns--er, puns. They had a guy who sang the Oscar Mayer song at the start of the race.
I was actually excited when #3 SlawDog won--I was rooting for them, being from the Southeast.
I know the race was probably carefully choreographed, including when the Sonoran Dog's engine overheated and began to smoke after pacesetting in the blistering first lap at 40 MPH, but it was a huge ball of fun, of the goofiest sort. I was giggling the whole time.
And that's what we desperately need these days. Goofy fun stuff.

my most recent hotdog was a new york dog from a diner. same vienna, but topped with grilled sourcrout. was very very yummy.
Chili dogs were a weird abomination. ;)
Shortly after moving to West Virginia, my Dad and I were at a farm auction, and we bought some hot dogs from the church group that was supplying the food. The lady asked if we wanted chili and slaw on the hot dogs.
Dad and I gaped at her. "Coleslaw...on a hot dog?!"
Now, my grandmother made the best coleslaw in the world, but it was always something you had on the side, and never on a hot dog! On top of chili sauce, no less! What heresy was this?!
But we tried it.
And liked it!
I don't often have slaw dogs, because I'm lazy and I like sweet pickle relish. But they do taste good.
During yesterday's race, we had to look up the other variations that the Weinermobiles were touting. I'm not so sure about the Seattle Dog's cream cheese topping, but I could see the other versions. Although I doubt one could pick up the Chi Dog, which looks like a sub sandwich for all the vegetation that gets put onto it! lol
I was also wondering why no one ever came up with a "Bratmobile."
Even funnier (I think) is this silliness.
Goofy, fun and light hearted.
Just what I needed to help me get over my post hospitalization depression and hobbling around.
(hip replacement surgery... My mobility is severely limited while I try to heal.)
I laughed, and had tears in my eyes just from the sheer joy of this pure silliness.
I need to laugh right now.

As an Australian, I can guarantee that the Mt Panorama circuit at Bathurst is way more challenging than a 1 mile oval!
That said, honestly the Indianapolis video is putting on airs on it does not deserve as tracks like Nürburgring, Le Mans, Monza and Silverstone are far more famous on the world stage... heck even Suzuka, Spa and Goodwood would be more well known worldwide. (and yes, I know Le Mans is actually Circuit de la Sarthe but most know it as Le Mans)
This is a Weinermobile race we're talking about.
Seriousness has no place here!
I reckon next time get an even larger range of oddball wheels and throw in a few retired drivers to increase the fun even more for the crowd.
This has given me the impetus to look up regional Hot Dog types and I'll have to try a few next time I'm cooking up hot dogs for the nieces and nephews... a coleslaw one still seems very weird to me though.
Oddly we have a roadhouse chain here that does a dog that sounds a bit like the Seattle one... Fried Onions, Mustard, Tomato Sauce and Cheese Sauce. Not bad for something different on a road trip.
