I have more demand for commissions than I can keep up with, but a majority of my work is from return clients. I'm curious about the others.
If you absolutely want a commission from me, but you aren't getting any, why is that?
Not enough money? Enough money but my prices are too high for your preference? You didn't know I took commissions? Unsure about the process? Too shy to reach out? You like my art, but I don't draw the species/bodytype/gender/content you prefer? Art is cute, but not high quality enough for your preferences?
I'm not looking for cheering up, I promise. Just honest answers from people who want art from me but aren't getting it. I'm thinking about reserving slots for new or infrequent clients only, to add a bit of variety to my clientele. Want to try to make it a little more fair to those who aren't in my inner circle, but I wanna understand who those people are a little better first, so please share openly c:
Thanks!

Price is main concern ofcourse, but also how easy is it to find contact info and prices with examples for the artists comms. And finally artstyle, does the characters and style idea fit the artists gallery/style/type.
You have a bright, soft and round happy art style, would feel weird asking for something edgy.
Also most of the time i pick artists i have worked with before as i know what they can do.
Spending more than 200$ is reserved for really special occasions ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ
The main sign that I can commission from an artist is that they use Boosty, Hipolink, Lavatop or similar. These are Russian thing, something between paypal intermediary (sometimes does not work) and a Patreon analogue.
Second happens to be the pet I reference as my character. He had a unique fur pattern on his chest that I would need to find pictures to get close.
Third would be payment options, again not sure your preference, but I do not have accounts on the popular money transfer sites.
What price are you comfortable with for a single character piece?
I have tried offering cheaper options but I always way overdo it and end up spending too much time to justify the price :') I still want to try to figure out cheaper options though
I have a big out of state move thatโs happening in just a couple days (Tuesday) and I donโt know how my financial situation will be for a good while no job, insurance (medical, dental etc.). Until then buying art is definitely out of my budget.
I did commission you many years ago, and one of the pictures you did of my character got printed and is now hanging on my wall !
It was a bust of Tamara : https://www.furaffinity.net/view/15844525/ and it is still, to this day, one of my favourite picture of my tigress. You did a stellar job.
1: I love them and hypothetically want to buy something, but I have no idea what I would ever commission them to draw.
2: I pace myself with them, because the overlap between my interests and their skill/versatility is pretty small and I don't want to commission the same thing over and over. (Artists can slide in and out of this category as my interests and inspirations drift, and their capabilities change over time)
3: I pace myself with them, because their prices are getting bid up to the point where I'd have to slow down on buying from other artists. It's not a "boo hoo they're so expensive I can't afford them now" thing but more of "oh sweet they're making mad bank and don't even need my help".
4: I love working with them and their prices and versatility mean I'll never run out of ideas/money to commission them with so I basically always have a comm or two open with them at all times.
There's also some misc categories like one-and-done artists where I have enough interest in their art to commission them once, but then that one piece feels like it fills my need for their work.
I think at the end of the day the stars just need to align right for a commission to happen. I need an idea/inspiration, the money to pay for it, the artist to be open, etc etc all at the same time. Sometimes that happens a lot, sometimes not so much.
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr0-7Ds79zo or rather, timing. Anytime I see an artist i'd love to commission I'm usually broke, lol. Inventory is expensive.
3. I now avoid auctions and a lot of YCHs just because I can't buy a lot of them for what they're going for now. I saw one recently where I'm like "Oh that'll be nice" but it was an auction starting at $450. And i was like "...No."
Also i just realized i did get this from you 2 years ago: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/52791706/ so hopefully in the future I can get more! XP
But yea. Timing and money. I always have something go wrong, it seems, when I finally do get money (like right now my van is having battery issues, ugh).
Advertising seems to be a big thing for people. I very rarely post that commissions are open, other than YCHs, so I'll probably have to consider doing that. Reserving a specific number of slots for new/infrequent clients and then advertising them on FA.
Thanks for the reply ^^
There are so, so, so many things I want to get drawn, by numerous artists. But, these days, I so infrequently get the chance to actually commission one of those ideas, from one of those artists, for one reason or another. And, because of that, I'm constantly getting new ideas, while older ones are regularly getting forgotten. So, when that moment of money and availability aligns, I tend to just grab whatever is in front of me. Almost like fishing, I guess.
Also, because Patreon. Patreon eats so much of my money. If I didn't have $$$ going into Patreon every month, I'd be able to get a lot more commissions. Before Patreon was a thing, I had a lot more money, and there were a lot more available options for commissions.
I have my own Discord server, with a hidden channel in it that I use to just bookmark random things, and jot down random ideas. and I frequently forget there are ideas in it.
also adoptables. adoptables are the bane of my bank account. why do artists have to make and sell such stupidly gorgeous and/or sexy character designs, and put a freaking autobuy on them?! D:
I wanted to try and cut back on buying characters, this year. and get more art! guess how that went. x_x of course it doesn't help that half of my pay, this year, has been regularly going to paying off anime figures I don't even have room to display x_x
I spend a lot less on Pokemon merch these days and it's amazing how much money I have now that it's not going into hoarding stuff I dont have room for XD
Also timing is a factor, who I see, when I see them, how much money I have at the time etc.
And then just an issue for me with reaching out to any new artist is that telling a new person my interests makes me anxious, especially if it's for a nsfw piece.
But that being said you do wonderful work, I still would love to get something from you at some point in the future :)
What price point do you aim for?
Ummm, it depends, on how much money I've got and what I'm actually getting. I'd say more recently for like a single character piece I try to stay under 65-70$ I think? I don't know I've never really set myself specific limits or goals when commissioning, it's just kinda more if I think I can do it, and I think it's worth it for me, at that specific time. Idk hope this helps some how.
I am very much still a novice when it comes to getting commissions (heck I can count the amount of comms Iโve gotten on one hand), and I donโt want to go into a higher priced commission still bumbling about like a fool ;;=w=
Price itself isnt an issue mind, would just need to budget accordingly for it, moreso I donโt quite have any proper reference sheets for the OCโs Iโve got, either being limited to what Iโve personally drawn, has been drawn by others, or nothing at all.
So less of a matter of if, only when once I get my rear in gear and get my papers in order!
The main reason I haven't commissioned you is having a ton of options, and forgetting a majority of them when the "Oh shoot I need to commission someone to draw this idea!"
In the moment it's a temporary lack of funds. I have a surgery to save for. It isn't anything life threatening, but more for my mental well being. In short it's trans related but yeah it has me buckling down on finances.
Plus, $100 is too rich for my blood. Often I am waiting for discounts or special offers from my favorites. Timing has to be just right.
My avatar is my highest cost thing I bought and for good reason. I wanted something super nice to rep me properly online...
for me, right now 100$ is 1/4th of my weekly pay after taxes and i live in an expensive state XD
it's all good :)
Not tremendously helpful, I know, but I always feel guilty when an opening does go by me because it's definitely not from lack of interest!
This year and even the year before has been rough with normal living expenses and any excess usually goes into savings for a 'rainy day' or staying in our usual artist bubble. Personally, been burnt a few times with either no work or simply taking several months for a single character piece and it discourages checking other people (trying slowly but only when a ych catches my eye).
Also been burned quite a few times in the past by other artists so treating myself to commissioned art while there are bills seems like a not good idea at the moment for me.
Your art is good and I very much enjoy seeing what you come up with. Even if I dont feel like I'm in a good enough spot to be buying art from some of my favorite artists, I still do my best to at the very least share the profile of said artists and their relevant works to the servers/groups I am in.
Your price point is justified with it's quality, it's just that I can't afford it with the current situation.
I love your work, though. Especially the stuff on your alt. account. I'd commission you lots and lots if I could!
Discord is preferred but notes are okay if the info is all in one place c:
The most recent muscular lady you did for me is particularly awesome, and I love the results even if it was out of your comfort zone.
If I won the lottery, or got a much better-paying job I'd be joining the top tiers of your Patreon and throwing money at you for commissions!
Things like I typically don't open for commissions publicly. and Slots are limited in commission info top the list of reasons not to even consider it. It's just a way to say not to waste either of our time with it. Which based on what you said here that you have more than you can manage is an accurate assessment.
So, getting "new" people outside of your steady commissioners would need a drastic price reduction to entice them over. Maybe doing quicker flat color art or toony stuff or such.
A lot of your YCHs START at $150+ before any bidding happens, and that is just way too much for most broke-ass furries when there are people out there with similar styles that will do the same type of stuff for half the price often in the $50-$90 range.
And as others above have said, the economy is completely ass right now for most people and luxury items like art take a backseat to rent and food and other necessities.
But the big thing for me, is sometimes I feel an artist's style doesn't fit my characters. As much as I enjoyed the art I got from you, after a few months I soured on it after another artist got closer to what I felt the character should look like (Mental model). And I mean no disrespect with that. Given you provided basically everything I asked for, to a Tee. And I'm not sure if my other characters would fit, or if I'd run into the same issue again, through no fault of yours.
I do intend to get some art from you again, once I figure out some design choices.
Mostly I just don't have enough money sometimes, But your work is incredible and I would love to throw more money at you if I could
two back to back car bills threw me into the negatives and ive not been able to climb out of overdraft since, just kinda hovering. any art ive posted since those bills have either been paid before or were from long term planned commitments like group pics.
before all that it was definitly awareness and just inherent bias to contact artists ive already previously commisioned when considering
For me, it's financial issues (which are now getting critical) having lost my job under less than legal circumstances and did try to start a GoFundMe, but, sadly, no bites.) I have made it to Round 2 in an application process and have a Behavioural interview on Tue.
On top of that, a major dental issue has come up and need to have a tooth pulled. That's gonna cost me about $300 CAD. A root canal, which is the other option, is nearly $3000 CAD.
